Need advise in quitting smoking

I've been smoking for the last 11 years. And ever since, to those who would ask me to stop, my reply would always be I will stop when I'm 40. Well, I'm turning 40 this year and I seriously would like to quit. It was very easy for me to quit during my pregnancy (I've had two) and breastfeeding days. But as soon as I have weaned my children and switched them to bottle feeding, I go back to the habit of smoking. I am not apprehensive about quitting. If it all, I think I'm already psyching myself up in preparation for THE DAY. Thing is I've heard that weight gain is a side effect of quitting. I may be turning 40 but looks wise and body wise I could pass for a 25 year old (no kidding!) I also noticed, about 2 years ago, that I was getting thick around the waist. Eating less doesn't help. Exercise is out of the question it's something I never felt the need to do so it isn't soemthing that comes naturally to me. It takes a lot of effort for me to do crunches. My question is for those who have quit, did you gain wieght? IF you did, how were you able to handle it emotionally? physically? Appreciate any and all your comments.

I quit one time cold turkey and didn't gain weight...it was easy.Emotionally I had no problems either...then seven years later I started again...so I too should think about quitting.I don't know if I could go cold turkey this time though.:)

Thanks for the reply. I was just wondering how old you were when you quit and what circumstances made you go back to smoking? I'm not a very heavy smoker. I would say that my maximum is 5 -7 sticks a day or am I considered a heavy smoker already?
