Why Do People Thank God?

Please don't turn this into a flamefest ... Why is it that when something good happens they thank god? I'm not talking about saying, "Oh, I almost tripped, thank god I didn't" but rather, "I thank god for my good health" or "Praise god for making sure my car didn't die on the freeway". I am sure that god has a lot more important things to do with his time than to be a good luck charm or watch every person every single minute of the day. You certainly don't hear them saying that god was to blame for them being in a car accident or that god didn't help them win the lottery.

How about a flood fest then? *evi| cackle* People thank God because they understand their limitations - that they are not as all-powerful as the perceived God is. When they offer thanks, it also helps them to affirm their gratefulness and appreciativeness of this world. And of course, there are some who use it as some slang expressions. They may replace "thank God" with some expletives and the result would mean the same to them. If you believe in the omnipotence of God, you can think him as a multi-processor computer - he is able to multi-task to an extent that he can monitor as many things about you at the same time while monitoring as many things about other people as he wants. And on the contrary, there are many people who have blamed God when things go wrong. I admit that I am sometimes a culprit too. :/

So you choose to see good things as caused by an omnipotence God, but if something bad happen he is not so omnipotent? This is quite selective. Don't you think?

I think its our lovely gesture to show and tell the great almighty that we believe in you.

Marzenna To me God is omnipotent no matter what happens . Not all bad that happens to us is from God. Take Job for example. He lost all his children and wealth then his health all because Satan wanted to prove to God that if Job lost every thing he would curse God. He was wrong and God blessed Job with more than he had in the first place.

I thank God for both the good and the bad, for I know that He is untimately in control, and I believe that there is a reason for everything that happens. I also believe that God can turn bad into good, if we are open to Him. I believe that God most surely takes the time to watch every single person every minute of every day. And it says in the Bible that He knows how many hairs are on each of our heads. Nothing is too small or too large for God. He is omnipotent, and turns impossibilies into the miraculous.

I thank God because I believe he has a hand in everything I do. It is also a religous practice to thank God for good health and not dieing on the freeway. In my belief God doesn't cause bad things to happen..so why would we blame him? He has a plan for us. WE may not know what it is. BUt there still is a plan.

I'd like to pose a question that's been bothering me for a long time. If you survived the recent Tsunami, or hurricane Katrina, would you thank God? And if the same catastrophe wiped out you family, who would you blame?

Yes, I would thank God either way. It is to our own best interest to do so because blaming would not solve any of the problem and would not do any good except create more misery. If we blame ourselves, other people or God for the catastrophe, would it change the way things are? Would it bring back our losses? I don't think so. We are here to learn the lessons.

Do you realize how ominipotent God is? God knows every single move we make here on earth. He is the creator of heavens and earth and the bible says, In every situation we see ourselves that we should thank God. He watches over us and we should acknowledge His existance by thanking Him in everything.

I am sorry but Bible also says that God asked Abraham to kill his son, that Levite, to save himself, handed over his concubine to the mob, who gang-raped her all night (Judges 19:23-4), that Jephthah sacrifice as a burnt offering his young dauther for a victory over Ammonites ( and this time God did not save her as Isaac). I do not think that I should acknowlage the messages from Bible that are so disturbing. Yes I know you will say..it is an analogy. But analogy to what?

It's a pity that God gets credit for everything that people do. All the misery in the world is due to the sins of the people. Though I have no direct answer to give there is a good joke that I have heard to be true: One couple was childless for a couple of years. The wife as usual was praying for a child. After two years they got a child. The wife pulled the husband and went to a temple and in front of the crowed was waving the child in front of the Alter, shouting "Here is the child the God has given." The husband, humiliated by this stripped all his clothes and went in front of the alter shouting "Here is the God that gave the child.

I thank God as I believe that what I receive in my life I receive this through the lord, whether it be good or bad as for anything good I thank God as I believe that it comes through him and anything bad I believe that he may be testing me to see if I am a true believer of his and also the devil always tries to tempt those that love God.

i personally do not understand this "thanking God" thing. i don't believe in God and will not thak a non-existant diety. my beloved, however, believes there is a God, but that GOd left us. Possible, i guess. i believe that everyone has their own reality and the only reason we meet is because parts of our realities cross over. Perhaps for some realities, there is a God. However, i do not believe there is one for my reality...and if there IS a God, it hates me.

I asked that this didn't turn into a flamefest, you had the chance to speak your mind and when somoene disagrees with you, you say you feel sad for them.

How very sad. And, you are wrong. There is a very real God and He loves you very much. You are the one who have turned against Him. And, I think that is evident in your handle. How very sad.

I thank God for many things in my life because I know he is watching over me and I would not have the things I have without him. My daughter is a prime example. When she was 9 months old she was sleeping in her crib. I had fallen asleep but for some reason woke up with the feeling to check on her. When I went into her room she was not breathing. Her eyes were wide open as she was trying to get air but no sounds were coming out. I thanked God for waking me and giving me the nudge to go into her room and for giving me the knowledge as to what to do at that moment. My daughter is now 12 and living a good life. That is an extreme reason for Thanking God but I thank him for the little things too because I think it is important to notice he is in my life daily for not just the miracles but for the everyday things he allows me to see and do.

I would put that down to a mothers intuition. that instinct that tells you that something is happening to someone you care about.

Wel, call it mother's intuition, but where did it come from?Isn't it that God gave us that unique gift in order that we may nurture and protect those that we love? So, do we thank ourselves for having that instinct or do we thank God for giving us one? Gratitude is an importnat element in our lives. I believe that gratitude is an attitude that changes everything. When we are grateful we accept that we are human beings who cannlt control everything that's happening (although some people sometimes feel that they are the only master of their lives). When we are grateful we accept that there is a God who helps us along the way. When we say thanks for every big or small things, disaster or blessing, we are acknowledging God and His omnipotence.

i'm one of those people who do thank God not only for every good fortune that comes my way but also for the unfortunate events that happened in my life. why? because i've always believed in a higher being and i've always believed that everything has a purpose and that each purpose is for our good even if it's not to our liking. look, everyone needs to believe in something. i know i need to be assured that there's someone who looks out or me. that's why i'm sure to say thank you for everything to Him.

whether one is in distress or happiness, whether one finds or loss, God is always recall because he is super power and one satisfies oneself reverting it. it is human behaviour otherwise nothing else.

I don't know..I mean..I see God/ess as a deity which wrote our lives though we do ultimately have a choice..(I'm an author, my characters all have choices, but I write what I know they'd choose..because I wcreated them, I know what they're gonna choose, they even surprise me sometimes so to me it's the same thing lol) So occasionally on special holidays, I'll thank her/him/it/they for having life fairly decent or for whatever wonderful thing which made life awesome or bareable. I don't bother over little things..'cause would I want all my characters harping at me about this or that..like 'thank you for allowing me to breathe'?? Noo..so I just..sort of return the curtesy. Treat others how you'd like to be treated and all that happy stuff lol. ^_^

I think people thank God to express their respect towards the GOD, although people usually remember GOD only when they are in need

I am positive that every creature realises that they are not an accident we did not just appear like rabbits in a magic show, but we must have come from some place and surely from some one. This I believe is the primary reason to thank God and to realise that we are too magnificent a people to be mistakes of nature and that we have a destiny and a goal in life to fulfill and we are supposed to honour the one who gave us the opportunity to be as we are.
