Do you taste the food you eat?

Is this sweet or sour? - Picture of junk food.

*munch* *munch munch* Honey 1: "Honey, how's the fish? Like it?" Honey 2: "Huh? Oh, the fish. I don't know." There were many times when I was asked how the food I was eating tasted like. 97% of the time, I would have no idea. There is nothing wrong with my sense of taste but usually when I eat, it is just for the sake of eating so that I will not feel hungry. I don't consciously try to taste what goes into my mouth because I already know what it tastes like. A fish is.. a fish. Chicken is.. chicken. How complicated can that be? Yet because of this "insensitivity", we sometimes forget to appreciate the finer details in life. When we have a craving for e.g. fries, isn't it the taste that gets us excited? Yet if we were to eat fries every other day, more often than not, we would just be stuffing them into our mouths, one weeny fry after another, while watching the clock like a hawk to rush to our next task. Is this right? Are we taking things for granted? Or is it time to start consciously tasting our food if you are like me? Or am I the only odd one out here? :P Do share your thoughts. ;-)

Eating is a tactile and sensuous experience. You are meant to be involved with the process of eating. The taste is meant for you to enjoy. It also tells your body that you have eating and to being the process of digestion. Mindless eating can lead to obesity. Please become more involved in the things you do on a daily basis. That will be living!!!

grilled steak - Grilled steak is one of the many food that I truly enjoy.
Yes, munch...munch...munch...did you finish the carrot cake my adorable bunny gave you. Darn...your question is getting weirder. I am always moving around my house 24 hours a day. I am too busy that the simple pleasure of eating a meal is not a luxury anymore. When I eat, I eat. But my mind is wandering on a lot of things. Like if wizard is gonna take my bunny away from me forever...waahh!!! The only time that I can truly enjoy my food is if you can present me a nice juicy quarter pounder grilled steak. I can eat like a pig if its a grilled steak. Mind you...not grilled bunny. There's my steak.

I stopped eating after the first bite and puked everything out. Didn't you say it contained poison? :P "Weird" questions are seriously thought out and often more "quality" than one-liner questions that you can see flooding myLot. What kinds of question do you want them? Your wish is my command, dearie. ;-)

I think that we are generally taking food for granted. If we were all to go without it for a whole day now and again we would soon learn to appreciate the taste of it. Most of the time we are in too much of a rush to truly enjoy what we´re eating, but I think it´s important to change this attitude. Eating unconsciously just about anything just to fill up the stomach can lead to serious health problems.

I often taste the food I eat...am not really the munch...munch..munch.. type of person, well not unless if am really starving that I would eat anything just to fill in my stomach. But if am not in a hurry at all, I always taste the food I eat... I would love to savor what I have on the table and enjoy every bite of them. Funny but I even sometimes complain of the taste of the rice coz there were times when I got a "not rightly cooked" rice and I just find its taste kind of annoying.

Oh my goodness. My friend and I just had this very discussion the other day. She is dieting and we were discussing the foods she is allowed and not allowed to eat. Now I am a picky eater compared to her, but I always thought I would eat most anything. We were comparing notes and she was describing the texture, taste and how food made her feel. Me, on the other hand I eat to fill a hole and that is all. I taste my food and know what it taste like, but I do not eat for the taste or feel. I was surprised to hear someone other than a chef or food fanatic speak about food like this. So, no you are not alone at all. As a kid I played hard all day and ran to eat as fast as possible so I could go back out to play, this must be where I got the eat for fuel only. I never slowed down to savor the taste.

Eating is an art in itself and I personally don't just eat to live but live to eat. I enjoy various cuisines and often experiment in my cooking. Of course being a girl, probably tasting what I make is obvious..lol My hubby on the other hand is sometimes like you, doesn't notice what he has been eating unless I ask him..hehe He was never one to appreciate another's cooking till his friend pointed out and asked how his cooking was. He told him that he never appreaciates or even comments on the food. Since then he has been (I should be thankful to his friend) very appreciative. If it is good or bad he says so and I'm up for constructive criticism so I don't mind. There is an old saying "chew your food 32 times" maybe it was said so you could taste every morsel and enjoy it. But in today's fast paced wold who has the time to do that? We aren't cows to being chewing cud..lol I know it feels nice to be appreciated and I do the same. I take time to eat and don't rush through my food.

YUp I do taste my food before I gulp it down. Actually I love eating and the only reason its so is because I eat different types of food articles which are good to taste and also because here the same stuff is cooked in more than one styles and everytime the taste is a bit different than the other. I love the food my mom cooks because she is quite good at it and I also like to cook because that way I can cook whatever I want, but I have never cooked as good as my mom. Take Care May GOD Bless YOU

Just try and live in a nursing home for 4 months where the food tasted like nothing. I got tired of trying to guess what it was and I know what they said it was but that was a far cry from the truth. I quit eating it, but I did lose 59 lbs in 4 months. Since then I have savored every morsel of food and enjoy it so much that now it is a pleasure to eat not just a means of staying alive. Even a year later I have not put on an ounce because I choose my foods carefully. I do not stuff french fries or any fast food down any more.

I think it has to do with the state of mind there too. You know you are staying in the nursing home and you know the food plainly sucks. And so you dig a spoon full into your mouth and you confirmed that it indeeds taste S***ty. So there. :/

Now see, I am just the opposite. I seldom eat because I am hungry - I eat too much because I love food :( I do like a variety so tend to savor the taste of each bit (if it's good) and often think of ways it might taste better or what else would taste good with whatever it is I'm eating. I do tend to eat in front of the computer alot as I live on this thing but even then I take time to "taste the food".

LOL - I have the worst eating habits in the world, I eat what I enjoy and then don't eat to make up for what I shouldn't have eaten. Half a strawberry cheese-cake means not eating the rest of the day :( I do try to eat healthy, but how boring :(

Mindful eating is good eating :-) This is a sentiment used by dieters, and nutritionists, though I can't say I take their advice as much as I should. Sometimes when I'm really hungry I just gobble down something, barely tasting it. Yeah, I know this isn't good for me. Plus, eating your food so fast dosen't give your brain enough time to know you are eating...or to send the signal that you are full. So in eating fast, you tend to eat more. My boyfriend usualy eats 2 helpings in the time it takes me to eat 1/2 of my my plate. That can't be good for him. I've been trying to eat more slowly, paying attention to when I am full, rather than feeling I need to eat everything that's on my plate (especially when eating out, with places that have HUGE portions). I mean, there's nothing wrong with leftovers. It just means I already have soemthing for lunch the next day :-)

Yea, you brought up a valid point. Food takes at least an hour or 2 before it is digested enough to give you the idea of feeling full. Nothing wrong with mindful eating of course.. all's good.. but even if you are just munching like a robot, as long as not feeling full immediately does not tempt you to grab more food, at least you won't be putting on weight. :P

What a good question. I know that some times I just eat to eat, but other times I stop & savor my food. The experts say don't do anything else when you eat, but eat - and visit with other people. Don't watch TV, don't read a book, don't do anything else. That one way to loose weight is to sit down & address your food, to take each bite & enjoy it, instead of stuffing it in your mouth to ease your hunger, because you stomach is full before your the message gets to your brain. (Mind you, I don't do any of those things.)

Personally, I believe so much food is mass produced, that much of the flavor is taken out of it. After a while it seems that people just go through the motions of eating because it is a necessity. I think that is very sad. Eating can be such a marvelous experience. Have you ever picked a strawberry and eaten it with the dew still on it? Have you ever pulled a bright red tomato off a plant and had it in your salad that day? Have you ever picked a ripe peach off a tree and when you bit into it, the sweet juice ran down your chin? Did you ever pull a piece of honeycomb from a bee hive and taste the most amazing fresh honey in the world? Did you know that pineapples never ripen more after they are picked. That in fact they are sugar tested before picking and the moment they are pulled from the plant they are at their sweetest. Did you know that when you go to Hawaii, you can visit a pineapple plantation and they will let you sample one right there. It is simply amazing how sweet it is. Just imagine the difference when you are eating pineapple from the supermarket that is 10 days to 3 weeks old. Did you know that the best tasting apples often have wormholes in them? Also they might not be perfectly round and shiny? That's because they have not been mass produced and covered in fertilizers and insecticides. So, I feel sorry for anyone who has not tasted food the way it was meant to be tasted. The way Mother Nature intended it to be.

Being a confirmed "Foodie" and a great cook, who has entered and won cooking contests... I taste everything and savor the final product with an almost unbreakable attentiveness... I seldom rush through a meal and if I'm in situation that calls for me to do so, I simply won't eat... The act of eating takes on Romantic and Spiritual qualities for a guy like me, so tasting every bite is the only way to go! :) PS: This habit makes for an enhanced set of cooking skills, too! :)

Hehe ok well I saw a few of the other responses and got a chuckle out of those. I enjoy the taste of food and the texture of it in my mouth. I couldn't not help but taste it. It's just part of the whole experience. I don't take food for granted. It's a part of life but it's in intergal part of it. We need it to survive but it can be a pleasurable part of survival as well.

Food tends to taste when we are in a good frame of mind, if we are preoccupied or disturbed or sleepy or bored, we just cannot taste what we are eating. If our mood is good while we are eating we can not only taste what we are eating but we can also smell what we are eating. I read somewhere that its more thate smell that gets the tastebuds active than anything else. Makes sense, thats why our mouth waters when we smell something that we like ;)
• Singapore

I agree with you - that our frame of mind quite often dictates the "taste" of the food we eat. If we feel happy... why, even munching cockroaches sounds appetizing! NOT!!!! :P

I am always looking at my meal as a feast. I try my best to savor every minute of my eating time as it is my luxury of the day and gives me a bit of time off the computer. I am trying so hard to get my little ventures going and so food is a great way to divert. I really relish food times and do take great care to enjoy the taste of my food. I spend enough time cooking it lol..

Unlike you, I do not eat just for the sake of eating :P Like what you say, we do not consciously try to taste what goes into the mouth because we already know what it tastes like. What about the first time you put that something into your mouth? I am sure you don't just gobble down. I am not sure about you. For me, either consciously or sub-consciously, I would take a tiny weebit of it, use the tip of my tongue to taste it, licked it, chewed it and then it is either in or out of the mouth. But once that tiny weebit is accepted by my mouth, the rest is history. Am I taking the food for granted? It is the same with what we are doing. It is the same with how we live our lives. Perhaps wizards are the odd-one out.

Yea, I am not talking about the first time. If it's the very first time, I wouldn't know the taste - and so I would consciously try to find out how it tastes like before committing it to memory. :P Wizards are never truly human. We are insane creations of immortality. *evi| cackle*

My favorite reply to such questions would be: "It tastes like chicken!" I am one person that have problem describing what food that I eat tastes like. So, if you were to ask me, you would be disappointed since everything tastes like chicken to me... I do know some people that can really describe the taste of what they are eating, using some bombastic words, which I cannot even remember or pronounce. As for me... I am just like you..

One of the common questions I was asked would be what meat this dish was made of. It's like, is this item chicken? Pork? Mutton? What?!! But usually I have no answer... I would have no clue what meat I was eating. :P
