I have met alot of people in my work who tell me they did not get any notice when they were layed off. I really think that there should be some type of regulation on this because many people have children and this is not given them a chance to have a job prepared to go to.

Companies have done that for as long as I can remember. My husband and I need a vehicle and he had just got a good paying job. He went and ask the boss about the job security. He was told that there was at least 20 more years of work. So we went and puchased a truck. Two weeks later, the job closed down. The employees went to work one day and was given a pink slip. That has been about 20 years ago and it never did open again. So it really is nothing new. You never have job security no matter what they tell you.

We nearly lost everyting when this job closed down. It is terrible and it is so unfair but they still do it.

I thought that there was a choice between severence or working the last couple of weeks. I might just be naive and living on a perfect planet all my own.

It happened to my husband about twenty years back. He got severence pay and allowed him to keep the company car, instead of notice but it came as quite a shock. However the company went into liquidation about a month later and the other workers got nothing. They had to leave their company cars at the premises and take a bus home. I think most other places give a months salary instead of notice when they want to terminate somebody's employment and it is usually in the contract so there is nothing they can do about it.

That is cruel. I was not aware that was allowed by law. Anyone I know who as been laid off has always had some kind of warning.

I kind of agree. I think, in my mind, you can tell the real quality of the company by how they go about this process. I think, to many companies, the majority of their employees are no more than a number or a robot. This is one reason I don't work for any of them. I think if the company has any idea of possible lay-offs, the employees she be told of at least the possibility of it happening in the near future.

Here in TN we have a law called the right to work, It basically with out going into the whole thing gives us the chance to accept any employment and if we quit for what ever reason it is not held against our performance references. There is much more to the law itself, but my point I want to make is that you would think this would work out very good for employees. The fact is it also gives the employers then an out to be able to fire you with out reason. Even illness with dr excuses can be just thrown out. Employers are not held accountable for your termination except in the case of you drawing unemployment. Thats the only time they must have a valid reason for termination to keep you from getting any benefits. But they can just throw you out on a whim.

I think it is wrong and terrible for companies to lay someone off without any notice, unless the person did something really bad that would cause an immediate release. Fortunately, I have never been in this position but almost was but left the company before they started laying people off. I think companies should give at least one months notice to allow the person the chance to find another job so they can support themselves and their family.

If this is the State of Affairs prevailing in US, the Govt. of India is eager at the instance of Multi National Companies to introduce it in India where the workers are very poor, unorganised and weak.

I think it is wrong. We are supposed to give 2 weeks notice if we are going to quit a job. So they should have to give notice they are laying you off. How do you feed and shelter your family if you have work one day and none the next.

That is one of the most unethical business practices that I know of, to suddenly tell someone that their job is gone. If the business has any idea that a job may be cut, they should alert the employee so that they might be looking for a new job. That goes to show you that these businesses don't give a hoot about their employees, its all about that bottom line...the 'ole profit margin. The thing is, they can still lay them off and keep their d@mned profit margin, but they could do it in a more humane way. We had a bunch of folks laid off 2 weeks before Christmas here in our town. Disgusting.

i think such companies just want to see their employee suffer to the point of no penny at all.they should set up organisations to protect workers like the trader unions.
