the percent of chinese who speak mandarin goes down 45% in rural areas and only 31%of chinese between the ages of 60to 68 can speak chians main dialect well as opposed to 70% of those between ages of 15 to 29. the lingua franca of urbanites and young reflecting a government drive to standardize communication and strenght national unity.
