ebay vs garage sale?

I've been cleaning out my storage unit for the last few weeks and I need to get some advice again. How do you determine which items should be sold on ebay vs. being sold in a garage sale? I know the obvious stuff, like used clothes and stuff, but what about stuff that's still in the original package & never been opened? My apartment complex is having a "garage" sale this Saturday, so I'm running out of time to decide what, if anything should be held back for an ebay auction. Any ideas for deciding factors?

maybe the only thing you can consider is the value of the things you have.. if you think you can sell it at a good price on ebay then go for it.. if not just include everything in the garage sale and collect what's left and think if it's worth to be on ebay... at least that's what i do..

I found a big suprise last year when I was selling things to move. Learning toys will sell better on ebay than in a yard sell. people are comming to buy what you have for a nickle! if you don't want to sell it for a nickle than ebay is the way. Check out complete listings when you do searches to see how well things are selling. If it's going for only a few dollars don't bother. It will only be ate up by listing fees, final value fees and the glorious paypal fees. Good luck!

well when i have to make that decision i always consider the shipping costs and if it's worth it. if someone will buy it for $2 will they pay $3 for shipping? stuff that's in original packaging would probably do pretty good on ebay. always look for what your selling and how much it's going for. also look to see if people are actually buying it.

Thanks for taking the time to pass this tip along. I was concerned about shipping costs too, so this makes a lot of sense to me. :)

Shipping costs & ebay fees, buddy. Some items maybe like non collectibles etc are not worth the fees & shipping costs to be sold on ebay. It is better to have clients come to your home to buy them from you.

Oh, how true! Unfortunately, I don't have any collectables, so the majority will wind up going into the garage sale. Thanks for pointing out some of the most important factors. :)

If you got clothes that are branded and in good condition, better try ebay and put it on buy it now. If you got books, check out the prices on ebay to see how much they are worth. Sell them by bulk. More or less I noticed that children's items sells fast in ebay. But you have to think about shipping and seller's fees too when you do it on ebay. On garage sales, expect people to be looking for a dollar or a nickel type of things so if you got items you think can fetch more than that on ebay...then try ebay and goodluck.

Thanks ladymoonstone! I think you've helped me add back into the ebay pile with your suggestions. I had already narrowed things down to a jordasch fur coat, a pair of randolph duke boots both unused gifts I won't/dont wear and a portable manual typewritter. Your suggestion about the books sold in lots has given me hopes for my 3 boxes of books! I had pretty much decided to give them to my niece who likes to read, but some are still a little too old for her. Maybe they can be sold in lots instead. :) ps. I'll check into the buy now button too.

I would only sell things that are worth over 20 dollars or so otherwise it won't be worth the effort of shipping it and everything. It's also harder to get your money's worth out of things over 20 dollars at a garage sale because most people don't like spending much when they go bargain hunting at garage sales. They'll try to get you down and eventually you'll end up losing money that way. Also garage sales can have thieves. If you do sell anything that is worth much keep a good eye on it. At least it can't be stolen over ebay, right?

LOL, I'm not too sure about that after reading thru this discussion! I have to say, you do make a good point for your rule of thumb. I think the 3 things I decided to hold back would meet this criteria, so I appreciate your advice. Note to self: find a garage sale buddy for bathroom breaks!

Garage sales are somewhat better than ebay, because you get to see and feel the item before buying it. The varity and range however, is much smaller. Some descriptions on ebay may also be misleading or not true, or the seller may claim for the item to be newer or in a better condition than it actually is. I think that the differences even the 2 out, but garage sales have the big advantages of seeing, touching and feeling the item. I would be quite surprised if you found any brand new items in a garage sale.

hi lenywp! Thanks for pointing these things out. You make a lot of sense. I know I wouldn't buy clothes for myself online. This is only the 2nd time someone has mentioned ebay descriptions, but you're right, I'll still need to decide on how to word an ebay auction without being misleading. Sure am glad I got this narrowed down to a possible 3 items! ;D

Go on ebay and search for your items, see what, if anything, people are bidding on and for what prices. that should determine what you should try to get sold at the garage sale rather than wasting your time waiting on an item that will never be bid on.

Thanks for the good advice beauty! I'm glad I was able to narrow down the stack to just a few that would need researching. Luckily, there's nothing seasonal about the remaining few items, so hopefully that'll help! :)

I think that you put all things at garage sayl, and if something is left you should try to sell that on e-bay!

Hi phoenix! Thanks for giving me your opinion on this. I think I've figured out most of it will work at the garage sale but not so many are worthy of ebay. LOL

I think I would put it all in the garage sale-- Put a price on it that you really want to get- One you would be happy with on e-bay.. and if the items don't sell- stick them on e-bay. What could it hurt?? E-bay is great but there are fees-- so if you can get the money you think you should at a garage sale-- Its better! No hassle for shipping, boxing the items up, etc. good luck in whatever you choose.

Thanks KrisNY! True, it never hurts to haggle a bit either. Pricing it higher definately gives a good starting point. The ebay & paypal fees already had me concerned so I think I'll just try a few of the better items & garage sale the rest. :)

I think it also depends on how much of a hassle it will be to ship the item. If it's large or weirdly shaped, or somewhat heavy, it'll cost more to shop it and you have to decide if that makes it worth it. The person buying it on ebay is paying for the shipping as well, and the cost of shipping can make or break an auction. You also want to put up enough shipping to cover the actual cost of shipping if your item sells for a low price.

Thanks for the advice serialmommy. Shipping definately influences what I decide to buy from ebay so that makes perfect sense. :)

Things in the original package, I'd sell on e-bay. You'd be surprised what folks will pay for stuff.

If you've got the time to do a garage sale, then do so. The good thing about this is that after you finish selling, you won't mind giving those unsold stuff to people. But if you want to sell it through ebay, it might cost you time checking up on what's sold already. But if you want to make things easier and more noble, give them to charity. ;)

Thanks for the advice linus! I think I've actually decided to accept all three choices. lol I've narrowed down the list of ebay worth items to about 3 now, the rest goes into the garage sale this saturday (1/2 day), and the leftovers go to my favorite local charities. ;D Would it still be so noble if I'm mainly doing it to save on my storage bill each month? LOL

I'm a shopper of e-bay myself. My father was a collector of McDonald's items. When he left my mother, we tried selling things on e-bay. I think it's a waste of time. You don't really make much of a profit. You end up spending more in e-bay fees then you actually make. If you don't sell a item, you get charged anyways.

Hi texasmom, thanks for sharing your opinion. I know the fees have had me worried too. I don't like having to pay for something that doesn't work. The idea of paying to get rid of my "junk" doesn't set well with me either. lol I'm glad I only have a few things that would even be worth pursuing, but I have a few alternate auction sites that I may try them on instead, and hopefully won't have as many fees. Luckily, just getting rid of some stuff will help me save on my storage bill each month. :)

Thanks for giving me your opinion chillybeefry! I agree, the cost are high, but this discussion has helped me pick a few items that deserve better than a garage sale. :)

I sold on ebay for awhile, and the fees are ridiculous. Then you have to factor in shipping costs including insurance on the item, and you may not be able to list it for very much price wise. If I were you, I'd try the garage sale first, that shouldn't cost anything to do. Anything left over, look on ebay and see if there's items like it and what they're going for to decide if it's worth it to sell it on ebay. If not, Goodwill :)

Thanks signal20, that's all good advice. I think I've figured out which items to hold out for an ebay auction, everything else goes into the sale & the leftovers go to charity. :)

I found it's only worth it to sell items online that are at least 50$. The few times I sold movies or DVDS or books online that were only sold for 10-20$, it was more of a hassle than it was worth! So I'd make the cut-off 50$. If you can get 50$ from an item, you should give it a try. Also consider trying half.com (if it's still around) or Amazon Marketplace. Those work better for things like DVDs, books, and video games sometimes.

ROFLOL, I think all my stuff just went back into the garage sale pile. :P LOL... Ok, maybe one or two things would still fit that rule of thumb. Thanks for passing along the tip. It's always nice to learn from someone more experienced. :)

Since you have the opportunity for a garage sale set up, I'd go with that first. Ebay, you have to deal with photos, writing the descriptions, waiting days for auctions to end, and all of the fees. Get an idea of the going price for the unopened stuff from ebay, and if it doesn't sell for that much (or close) at the garage sale, put it on ebay.

Thanks cj! I think I've gotten it narrowed down to just two or three things that are still ebay worthy, but you're right, I still have to consider the pics & description! Uuuugggg! Sure glad I asked for help to sort thru some of this.

Search the completed listings on ebay and you can see which items have sold and at what price. It is found under advanced search and then you check search completed listings only

Ebay could be very expensive. I've been selling on ebay since 1999 and sold a few items but most of the time it has cost me . I think that the only people making money on ebay are the Power Sellers, and ebay is making a ton of money Because the listing fees will kill you. I found a better website than ebay its called u-bid and the prices and the listing fees are better. http://www.u-bid.com Try it!

Hi bacpro, thanks for your comments. I definately don't want to be a power seller yet, because I'm definately afraid to lose money on getting rid of excess stuff. lol I have seen U-bid & may consider using them as well since I have a few other free auction sites available, just to test the waters. Much nicer to test something without it being so costly. :)
