India has a lot of catching up to do as far as international football is concerned. Our ranking is pathetic, in fact we are not even present in the top 100 list. The methods to make football more popular is, firstly, the craze for cricket has to be diminished. Which seems impossible as of now. Better football stadiums, better coaching for our club teams is required. The standard of coaching has been very pathetic. Our national team can be easily thrashed by a second division European team. The good clubs of Indian football are, Mohun Bagan, East Bengal, JCT, Mahindra etc. Baichung Bhutia is the star of Indian football.

First of all we need to start from the beginning. The boys of the age group of 6 to 8 should be selected and they should be given the physical training necessary to build up a body required to withstand all the hard tackles and pushes in we witness in football matches these days. For this, if necessary, they should be given training in gymnastic, martial art etc. Most of the young football players we find theses days are from poor families and they do not get proper nourishment. For this quality food should be ensured for them and their bones should be so built up as will enable them to run and do things easily in football matches. If boys whose bones are already matured, i.e. whose bones cannot be tuned to the need in football matches, we won't be able to get to our goal. What we need to remember is that football is a body contact game and for this a tough body, which is able to withstand hard blows, is required. All the footballing skills will be in vain if the body is not strong enough! Then we need to give these young would-be Peles thorough training especially in areas like scoring goals and tackling.Continuous and relentless practice is necessary. In a footballmatch a player has to face stiff resistance from his opposition. He has to go through a number of hurdles. Therefore a type of practice will be helpful to get accustomed to the situation and overcome it easily. In this practice there will be three to four players trying to prevent a footballer from scoring a goal and this footballer's objective wiil be score the goal overcoming this opposition. If they practise repeatedly, they will, I think, immensely benefit from it. In this manner more such means should be adpoted to make practice more fruitful. Foreign great coaches should also be consulted to get their advice which is of great value. The players must lead a disciplined life to keep their body fit. Another thing of great importance is the necessity for making football more and more popular in India. We know unlike cricket football is not a popular game in many of the states of India. Thefeore many a talent is lost uknown and unseen. Football should also be introduced as a subject at school level.
