What causes hand swelling for 4 days??

I'm sending my husband to the doctor today. His hands have been swollen for 4 days for no apparent reason. He doesn't do manual labor at work, so we can't figure out what is causing the swelling. I know sometimes when infection sets up in the body, hand swelling is a symptom. I pray that everything is okay. Has anyone ever experienced this before?
