877 Numbers a Scam?

United States

I mentioned to my mom today that I keep getting calls on my cell phone from 877 numbers and I don't know why. She told me that any call from an 877 number was a scam to get money. She said the person calling you is from somewhere in Europe and they someehow send charges to you. I always thought that 877 numbers were another toll free prefix for a number. Anyone know who is right?

They are toll free so they are used by companies trying to sell you something. Also, the call is toll free with the company that provides the number but once you connect, the site on the other end can charge you a pe rminute rate for the conversation.

Wow, I never knew about this. What kinds of companies are calling and doing this awful thing? I am almost always online with dialup, so almost no one can catch me on the phone, but this information is important to know. Anybody know more about it?

I don't answer my cell phone if I don't know the number. I figure if it's important they'll leave a message identifying themselves.
