Have you ever tried grits

United States

I grew up on grits. When my inlaws came to visit, They could not figure out what grits was. It was so neat to watch them try them. some of them liked it and some said they would stick with there cream of wheat. It is so funny that americans have different foods in different areas. I thought everyone ate grits. I am a southern gal and never been anywhere until I met my husband. People that are not southern thinks we will eat anything. Well that is not true!!! We wont eat anything, just almost anything. LOL

Grits are good with bacon and eggs and toast. You put butter in them and yum yum. The boiled peanuts are boiled in salt water for quite a few hours. They are good too. See what yall are missing out on. You have got to come down south and try out some of this.

grits are a ground, usually white meal of dried and hulled corn kernels that are boiled and served as a breakfast food or side dish. It's sort of like cream of wheat, only with corn, and they lend themselves more to savory dishes than sweet.

Well I dont know how to fix them from scratch. I would be more then glad to send you a box of grits. All I do is boil some water and pour the grits in the water. Once the grits are done, I add salt and butter. It is so good with bacon and eggs and toast.

Yes, I have had grits but then my father and his family were from the south, Kentucky. I didn't care for them myself but my Grandmother made them from time to time because she loved them. We also had them whenever we went to visit family in Kentucky. What I loved was Grandma's "fried corn" and I don't know how she made it but it was so good, sugar and butter I think and then fried it in a pan but I'm not sure. It was different than other people's corn I know that.

I like fried corn too. My Dad loved it. I have made it as well. You can take fresh corn and cut it off the cob, put butteer, a little salt and pepper and the corn into a cast iron skellet and fry stiring frequently until it is browned a little then you can sprinkle with a little sugar and coook for another minute or two. It is so good!~

of course I've had grits, I'm from the south. I love them with lots of butter. Some people put syrup on them too. I can't do that cuz I'm diabetic. I laugh when people don't know what grits are... I won't eat just anything. I'm the pickiest eater there is... and it pisses me off that people say that about the south. I've been lots of places and I won't eat red meat and being from the south doesn't mean crap.

My Dad always made us eat grits growing up. I never knew it was a southern dish until I got older. It doesn't make much sense to me since he was born and raised in Northern PA. My kids love grits. I never made homemade grits though. I get the little packets from Quaker.

I love southern food. I love my grits with butter. Fried green tomatoes and pinto beans. If I didn't know I was born in New York City I could call me southern. LOL

I was raised eating grits and have hated them all my life. My kids love them, my wife loves them, my parents and brothers love them, but I hate them. The only way I will eat them is if I mix in some bacon and eggs. My family always put mustard, cheese, butter and other stuff in with them...I just don't like them.

Grits are good!! Bacon, eggs, biscuits, and grits make a wonderful breakfast! I can remember eating dandelion greens when my mom fixed them and thinking they were good. I've seen a lot of people turn their noses up at even the thought of eating them. I don't think I could handle snails but I hear some people consider them a delicacy.

My hubby and youngest son eat snails one time when we went on a cruse. I could not even look at them when they were eating them. Yuck!

Well I do think I have had grits before but i really don't know what it truly is... I think they are good though from what i remember but its just one of those things that confuse me. I thought a lot of black people ate grits, maybe thats just a stereotype up here in New York but i don't know. Another thing that confuses me is why so many people don't know what grits are. Including me. But yeah people eat different stuff in different parts of the country. That or they call the food something different. For example, Hoagie vs. Sub, Coke vs. Soda vs. Pop. And then you got the competition between New York pizza and any other pizza in the country. But the best pizza in the nation got voted to be in phoenix, arizona. How random is that? hahahah. Good Discussion...

Well it is not just African Americans that like grits. If you are a southerner, you probably like grits. Or you have tried them. You are right. My hubby is from Portland Oregon. When he first came here, we went into a grocery store. He asked me if I wanted a "Pop" I said "sure". He asked me where they would be in the store? I took him to the ice cream isle. He looked at me like I was crazy. He was talking about a "Soda" and I thought he wanted ice cream. That was the first time I heard someone call it a "Soda".

Sothern food can be a real shock to someone who is not used to it. I grew up in an area populated heavy with Italians and Polish people, so culturally that is the kind of food I am used to. Moving here made me try new things. Grits aren't my favorite, and I don't like black eyes peas at all. But I find I like pintos, and some other foods. Here they have a tendency to put cole slaw on everything, and my stomach just can't handle it. I can't wait to take a trip home just so I can get some good Italian and Polish food, well, that and see my family. I will try anything once, if I don't like it I won't eat it again.

I have been in the South for my whole life, grits are amazing. I feel a deep sorrow for anyone who has not tried grits. Getting people from the North to try grits is one of the most entertaining things to do. I have done it countless times and got replies from "I'll never try that again," to "OMG How have I lived this long without this!"

I always buy a large box of grits when my hubbies family comes to visit. None of them like it, but I always fix the grits just to see them look at each other and then at the grits. It is so funny.

Well I dont know what porridge oats are. Grits are hard until you put them in water to boil. Then you add salt and butter. They are good with eggs, bacon, and toast. Try it.
