What do you think about people who get rid of their cats, & then get 2 kittens?

My neighbors had 2 cats. Last week, they got rid of the cats, because they said they were clawing up the furniture. Yet, I came home yesterday and found that they had bought 2 new kittens. When I asked them where they sent the cats, they said that they had dropped them off at the pound? How would you react to this, and what do you think I should do???

As the first replier said, this is terrible. Cats, or any kind of pet, is not just a toy to play with for a while until you get bored with them. You can't trade an "old model" in for a younger one. I think their excuse about them clawing up the furniture was ridiculous, because what makes them think these kittens won't? And because they had two cats, abandoned them, and got two kittens, it does seem like they are REPLACING them. Animals are living beings and they have feelings. When you take a pet into your home, it becomes a part of your family, not just something to play with and keep yourself occupied. You said they told you their reason for abandoning the two older cats was because they were scratching the furniture and stuff - maybe you could try asking them how they're going to prevent the kittens from doing the same thing. It would be interesting to know their response.

I think that is kind of awful that they put the cats in the pound! who knows whats going to happen to them now. They should have at least found homes for them before buying two new cats. And it doesnt make a lot of sense to me because kittens are going to be more likely to claw up furniture than older cats.

Well - there isn't much you can do except for rescue the cats they irresponsibly dropped at the pound (who could have been taught not to claw the furniture if they'd known what they were doing to begin with). More than likely they are going to declaw the two they just got if that was the reason they gave away the others- these neighbors of yours sound pretty confused.

Oh my gosh I would be livid. That is a sure sign they should not be allowed to have animals. I do get a bit worked up over these things because I am one that everyone calls to take in stray animals. I guess I am a bit on the blunt side when it comes to people and how they treat their animals. I am the type that will go to the door of someone that isn't feeding their pets that are chained up outside. I know some have trouble with that direct of an approach. Now if it was my neighbor I would come right out and say.. this is really bothering but why did you get rid of your cats only to get new ones that will do the same thing as they get older. Do you think that is being a responsible pet owner? That may let them think a bit about what they did. Good luck!

I definitely agree. I love animals, but I wonder if there is a personal line you cross when you are dealing with people like that. They are our friends, but I don't think they are people that I could rationalize with about this. Thanks for the help

I think that kind of behavior is irresponsible and complete nonsense. It's one thing if someone finds a GOOD HOME for a pet they can't keep any longer, but just dropping them off at the pound AND then getting two new kittens? That borders on the absurd. Cats and dogs aren't just like "fluffy toys" you can trade out if you get tired of them.

That just makes me sick! People like this should not be allowed to have pets! Too bad you can't just take those kittens and either find a home for them or keep them for yourself (please don't do this, it would only get you in in trouble).

hey it made me laugh. what is the difference of kitten & cat? They both covered with fur and scatter and mess up the household.

well not really much you should do, but its so pathetic that your next door neighbours could do that because nearly all cats well ones i have seen do it..

I would be upset; but, once I calmed down I would talk to them about it. I don't know how well you get along with them; but, I would have a frank discussion with them, or else those 2 new kittens will end up in the pound in a couple a years too. I would ask them for more information about their actions and I would let them know how I felt about it. Other than speaking to them, there really is nothing you can do. They are not abusing them. If you are worried about the kittens, you could ask them to give them to you if they "get tired" of them instead of taking them to the pound. Then, you could try to find them good homes yourself.

Thats disgusting, People like that don't deserve the privlige of owning animals. The kittens would do way worse damage clawing at the furniture. I'd tell them to have a heart and do the right thing by these animals and not get any more. They dont deserve them. I'd be sooooo peeved, I'd just fly off the handle at them.

Well first of all I am not sure that you can do anything about this. These sound like horrible people. Who gets rid of your cats and then gets some kittens. Well hopefully the cats they got rid of will go to good homes. We have 3 young female cats and we adopted them from shelters.

I find that sooo rude cats are adorable no matter what their age... also if they were complaining about clawing kittens are worse
