I would check him. Just give him a bath and a good brushing. You may also want to put him on Advantix Flea & Tick if Ticks are a major issue in your area. They can get Lyme Disease and become very ill from ticks.

You should check his hair frequently to check for ticks, make sure to get them off because they can be harmful.

For sure, don't forget all the nooks and crannies, in between toes, ear flaps, everywhere, they are so dangerous, its better to be safe than sorry.

I certainly would, especially if you were in the same area as your dog. Dogs are pretty easy prey and those ticks can hide in a dog fur. It takes a bit of effort since dogs have heavy thick hair, but it is better to be safe than sorry . I have found them on my cats, they tend to go in to the bushes and trees more. They are just so gross . Be sure to take them up out carefully with a set of tweezers, you don't want to leave any part of the tick in .

It wouldn't hurt to give him a bath and a good combing just to see whats going on. It is the beginning of flea season so you never know what you might find.
