We pulled some ancient shrubbery out along the south foundation of our house. I'd like to replant but there are so many types out there and I don't know much about the different types. Please recommend some pretty varieties of shrubs that will not grow very tall (maybe 4')and don't require a lot of maintenance.

Hollys are a great shrub. You would have color all year. They are evergreens. In the spring they have very small white flowers, and then get red berries. You need to make sure you get at least one "boy" to have berries. The tag will say "boy" on it.

There are a lot of good shrubs to pick from. It depends on your soil, climate, what side of the house they will be on. Some grow fast and require constant attention, others dont. If you have a nursery or place that sells them, talk to one of the people there. You could also ask your county agriculture people what grows best there.

I'm very fond of bush roses.. they are so pretty! And come in many colors.. And now also they make the resistent sorts which survive winter without coning them, so that's all the better. I always thought I should put in among them somewhere bushes which attract birds.. but I haven't researched it yet, and now that hubby is feeding the birds, we get lots anyway..
