Dining out and who gets the "check"

after driving for 9 hrs (14 hrs the day before) we decided to treat ourselves and prolong our trip a little by eating a sit down dinner. All during the stay at this restaurant - the waiter came to me; would you (all) care for any beverages, have you decided what to order? does anyone need a refill(looking at me)? , would you care for anything else?, are you all set then? then when he brought the check he placed it under my water goblet. My dh was sitting directly across from me.....never addressed the whole time. I asked dh if he would please take the check up to the register. If the waiter realized that dh was to be the one leaving a tip he may have put a little more effort in acknowledging his presence! I felt embarrassed for my husband who works awful long hours and a most unpleasant job in order to provide for us. I do not earn any wages and he does not get even the pleasure at a rare dining out to be treated as the head of the family.

It was rude to not be addressed at all. Most of the time when we dine out, they place the check on the table between the two of us, or I 've even heard some ask, "who's getting the check today" We both work, but whenever we go anywhere, dinner, movies, store, my husband carries the cash and pays. He also always drives. It's just soemthing we do.

I thought so too. In this age we live in I think it is probably quite appropriate to ask "who gets the check". I like for my husband to pay, it gives that sense of being protected and taken care of. I actually am the driver, and I would rather not be, but for safety sake that is what works for us, lol, dh is always so tired.

That was really rude of the waiter to just assume. Most of the time when dinning out our waiter places the check in between us. If not they always give it to my husband which is kinda funny. He does make the money but I am the one that has it on me, so I usually pay the check.
