ideas to conduct computer class

i am currently teaching computer classes (computer graphic and web design) for a group of students. however, these group of students are those who basically don't have any IT nor art/design background. can anybody suggest what is the best to conduct the class? i am thinking of throwing away the syllabus and try to conduct a project based class but until now, seems doesn't receive good response from the student as some of them are still not master the basic, some other doesn't take the class seriously and adopt 'as long as i can pass' mentality. thanks for any response.
