dangerous friends

I want to let you all know that for the first time while updating "my friends" list I went into one of my "friends" profiles and I received a pop up warning from my security system advising me that this was a potential spy page and had "blocked" it. This friend has changed her ID in the past couple of weeks so I really don't know what is going on but I do think it is important to let you know that hackers can try and get in through your "friends"

Oh great. I suppose those people just don't have a good life so they thrive on making others unhappy too. It is really sad I think. If they have that much knowledge of computers why don't they put it to good use? I knew of a 16 year old who was a hacker and he hacked into a University and changed grades and then got board with that and hacked into a bank and changed accounts numbers. This child had so much knowledge but no parental supervision and no outlet for his knowledge except to do bad things with it. I just find that so very sad. Of course he was caught and he was not allowed computer access for many years. He of course got on a computer and messaged me to tell me what he had done. I did not know him personally except through the computer. I told him at that time that he should be putting his knowledge to good use. So I bet now he is in a jail some where because he was never given a good outlet for his knowledge. It really is just sad.

My cousin was eight when he hacked into the heating system of their local Tulsa K-Mart. He raised the temperature to 90 degrees before the police were able to trace the hacker and then they showed up on his parent's doorstep. It's crazy what people can do.

Thanks for the alert. If this had happened to me I don't think I would have known what was going on and I probably would have just ignored it. I suppose we should be careful too not to give any personal information in pms for the same reason. I hope I haven't got that 'friend' on my list.

OH how nice, geesh. I think those people really need to get a life! I mean, seriously, can't they find anything better to do? Why do so many people have to be so destructive and mean? It's just not safe to do ANYTHING anymore!

By changed her id, do you mean avatar, or name and avatar? Is there something we should be doing to protect ourselves? I have a popup blocker, and I do scans and clean ups periodically. Maybe not so often as I should. Thank you for the warning.

The trouble with popup warnings, is that often they can't really distinguish between a good site & bad. Although it is a bit odd that this friend would change her ID. Thanks for the warning.

Hello whiteheather, I wanted to clarify something on what you ran into here at mylot. What i believe has happened is their is a shout box that was left as a comment in the members profile. This was happening to me and a number of my friends a little over a month ago. Couldn't figure out why all of a sudden I was getting this. I was actually worried that mylot wasn't a reputable site as it happened right after joining. I'm providing a link for you that should explain what happened. Hope this helps to clear this up. I do have a question though as I have been trying to change my daughters user name here do you have the members profile that I might contact them to see how the were able to change their user name. As I have been unable to do it and everything that I have read has been said that it can't be done. If you could pm that would be great. Thank you. http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/803808.aspx

This is probably a software that captures and analyzes Web traffic.

Wow - I would never have thought of that! Do you think these 'ghost friends' that are popping up are something to do with this too? Thanks for the warning!

Thanks for your advice. I've encountered some profiles where there are pop-up warnings when I visited them. I don't know why some profiles have such pop-up warnings.

thanks for the warning heather. Think that will benefit a lot of us and also give some deterrence to the hackers.
