Alternative to Skype

I am sure most of you know about skype. My dad works abroad and we use skype to make calls over the internet. However lately the line has started getting really cranky and sometimes i can't hear him at all. I am looking for an alternative to Skype. Which would you suggest?

Have you tried Yahoo Messenger? It also allows PC to PC calls and it's free.
