Most of us are read to by our parents when we are babies and tucked in at night via bedtime stories. That was certainly the case for me. I remember about ten years ago how my mom showed me the special "baby books" she brought for me-you know, the ones where you can't tear the pages. Anyway, how did you develop your love and ability for reading?

I really can't remember how early it was that I began reading but I do remember when I was in 4th grade and the Scholastic Book order forms that the teacher handed out with new books that you could order for 50 cents and less. I really wanted those books and I did get to choose the ones that I wanted and my parents usually paid for them. I chose all the horse and animal stories, every single one and I also chose the series books and mystery stories. It was the most exciting day ever when those books came in and I got to carry home my really big stack of books that were mine, all mine! And yes, I did feel that way about my books then. I was very selfish with my books. The few times that I loaned out books, people either did not return them or they messed them up. I remember crying about that when a so-called "friend" returned a book and she had really messed it up, missing and ripped pages. I don't think I loaned a book ever again after that. I really loved my books, they were my friends. The people in books had the fun and friends and adventures that I wish that I could have had. My childhood was not so great so books were a real life-saver. I still collect books now and I have way too many of them. And I still don't really loan them out either. Adults don't take care of books any better than kids did, I have found! Books have been a very important part of my life for my entire life and I would guess that won't be changing any time soon, if ever.

Losing books that I've loaned out, or having them treated badly was always traumatic. I learned pretty quickly to be careful who I loaned them to. I have books that I would never loan out because I don't want to risk losing them.

I read a lot during my highschool day but it's not a passion for me. Way back then, I read because I have to. Now that I'm in college, little by little, I realized that I love reading. I have not read so many books but as I gaze my eyes through lines of the books I'm reading, I'm enjoying. My cousin and some of my friends encourage me.

To be honest I can't remember when I started reading all the time. I do remember reading my first Stephen King book at the age of 8. The thing I remember most about it was the monkey on the cover with the cymbols lol. I have been a horror fan ever since. Luckly for me I have found someone who shares my love for books. My fiance is just as bad as I am. When we go to the bookstore we can't get out without spending at least $100. I spend more money on books than I do clothes lol. We have books on any subject you can think of.

According to my mother, when I was three I taught myself how to read by watching other people read aloud. As long as I can remember, I have loved losing myself in a good book - the only limit to the entertainment had is in your own imagination, and that is a beautiful thing indeed.

My dad used to read to me all the time. I was the 3rd child in our family of four so we already had the full Disney Collection (wish I still had those books!). Everynight my dad would sit at the end of the table and read his Louis L'amour Cowboy books and I would go and get a book squiggle up on his lap and bug him until he would put his book down (with a loud sigh) and read me my book. Everynight, he would only read 1 book to me but it was one of my favourite things to do. I like my dad now have a huge addiction to reading, even now in this world of computers, email, and cell phones, I prefer to curl up with a cup of coffee and a good book anyday. I have a 4 year old myself now and I read him a book everynight before bed. I hope he loves books as much as I do. It is incredible to use your imagination rather then be shown or told what to"see".

My mother was my first reading teacher. It was her habit to read to me at night. I was able to read independently on my own by the time I was four years old. She would give me books instead of toys. I was an only child and books became my constant companion. I would spend most of my time with my nose buried between the pages of a book. I was a voracious reader and that habit stayed with me until adulthood. NOw, because of the strictures of life, I cannot indulge in reading as much as I used to. Still, once in a while, the written page does beckon, and I would escape in the world of books for period of time.

I had the same experiences as you did. My parents read to me and I learned to read early. I loved reading all through my childhood. It wasn't until I majored in Political Science in college that I began to hate it.

I think Iwas born with the passion for reading. around the age of 4-5 iwas reading all that was written in Tamil which is my mother tongue. As i grew i started reading English and Hindi Books.I have read as much as time permits and changed my glasses several times. Now the doctors tell me to change glasses every year. The nuisance is they have given me for seeing, reading and computer seperately. Still the passion for reading continues.

My Dad used to buy us books. Whenever we were sick, he'd come home from work with a book. Or if we did well at exams. Sometimes on his birthday, we'd get books. On our birthdays too! I used to be so addicted to reading that I used to read under the bedclothes at night cause I couldn't put the books down.

I remember it was my mother who started me into reading. When I 7 years old, I vaguely recall that I can already read better than those my age. But I think I really started reading as my hobby when I was 10 years old. I started with my mother's old love stories pocketbooks. Now, I read different kinds of books, depending on my mood.

I was an only child and loved school. I was reading by about age 3 and have always read voraciously. It was a substitute for having other kids to play with. it was an alternate reality and an escape from real-life situations. I've just always read and loved it. I also like the feeling of "looking into" someone else's life through reading.

I have always loved to read...when I was younger I remember sneaking out of bed at night and hiding in my closet to read more of my first "chapter book". My mom said that I was the only one of her 3 kids that always wanted different books to be read to me. My brother and sister often wanted her to reread the same 1 or 2 books over and over again. And neither of them read as much as I do...maybe that has something to do with it.

I don't have any memories of how I learned, but I was reading on my own before I started school. I never thought about reading as a passion. It's just always been the central feature of my life. I can't imagine a life without books.

My parents weren't big readers, and didn't read to me as a child. I guess I must have learned to read in school. As soon as I learned to read, I started reading everything I could get my hands on. I especially liked mysteries, and still enjoy a good mystery. Reading was a great escape from the real world while I was growning up.

It was in university when I no longer had as much stress attached to reading. My dad never reads (dyslexic) and my mom and sister don't read the types of books I typically like. After I graduated, I finally just started going to thrift stores and buying anything that looked remotely good.
