Most dogs don't bark at night without the reason. I always check my dog if they bark and see what is going on. If I can hear other dogs barking, probably someone is passing by to close to their property.

I don't have a dog at home though I would love one. If it barks, I would definitely check it out. It is the same if someone in my house started screaming in the middle of the night. It's also better to err on the side of caution.

I would get scared thinking a big dog broke into my apartment and gobbled up and cannibalized my cat, since I only own a cat, and if my cat started barking like a dog, then I would head straight for the brain neurology department at the hospital

when my dog barks at night, it usually means that he sees a rat near his cage. Or just one of our neighbors.

Our dog doesn't bark in the middle of the night, if all the lights are off and everything is quiet. I think if she ever did, we would get up and see what was going on. We have a roommate and my husband's sister who live with us, and they've come in before in the middle of the night after my husband and I have gone to bed. During the day, she barks when ever she hears the door open, and then goes to see who it is. At night I'm told that she doesn't make a sound, just comes up to see who it is. She'll make a little quiet whine (as opposed to her usual deafening squeal/howl when she sees someone she likes) and wag her tail, but that's all. So I guess if she were willing to bark at someone in the middle of the night after proving herself to be silent when we want it, we'd really want to find out who it is and what they want.

When my dog barks at night, my first thought or reaction is that someone must be outside of my home or trying to get in it. We have ADT, but I still worry when he barks at night time. If I lived by myself on the second floor, I would be too scared to get out of the bed and go see what is going on. I could not go to sleep until I knew everything was okay. there are too many bad things happening in the world today and we can never feel too safe and secure now.

well probably you are right steph but i am too lazy to get out of bed..and i know next week i will be along in the house for a whole week so i hope everything will be alright. i think maybe i will put natz(my dog)in my bed at night so nothing happens to him if someone will decide on coming to the house at night time..

It depends on which of the dogs is barking. If it is my older dog, he could be having a senior moment, or he could be in distress (needing to be let out to pee etc). If it is my younger dog, chances are it is a neighborhood cat annoying him through the patio door. I wouldn't worry about burglars unless the dogs tone took on a frantic quality. They bark very differently is people come into the garden.
