I am thrilled with the idea but haven't heard much anout it except ads on net. Has anyone tried this out and could you give examples of signs? Here are some things I have collected on the net. Seems to be a fantastic way to communicate with your baby knowing how frustrating it must be not to be able to tell your mum what is it that you want... Teaching your child has many benefits for both you and your child. Earlier communication with your child. Some children learn to sign as early as 7 or 8 months – much earlier than a typical baby learns to talk! Babies who can communicate through sign are often much happier babies and toddlers which translates into a happier YOU! Babies who can sign have shown less frustration and tantrums overall since they can usually communicate their needs better. Studies have shown that babies who learned sign as infants had a higher IQ overall than babies who didn’t learn sign. Children who have learned sign have been shown to have more advanced language skills than children who have not learned sign. Signing in the classroom has led to improved math scores among students. Learning sign language at an early age helps develop the brain in the critical early years of language development. Signing with your child provides a unique bonding experience between you and your child. Signing opens the doors to wonderful friendships with those who use SL as their primary language. Signing helps promote self-esteem in children. You would be surprised at how often knowing sign language really comes in handy for both you and your child!

Signing is great for all the things you put down. My daughter started learning sign language when she was 4 months old and by the time she was 1 knew over 25 signs. It is great to communicate and they can tell you they are hungary, stinky, tired etc. Baby Einsteins has some signing videos and a local tv show in SLC, Utah called Signing Time, I know they sell as DVD's so check online.

My son began learning sign language around 9 months of age and it really was beneficial. He quickly picked up the signs for milk, more, hungry, done, and outside. I taught him the signs by saying the word while showing the sign. It was so nice when he could let me know that he wanted more milk instead of just crying to get his message across.

I totally agree with teaching babies to sign. I began teaching my 4th child as soon as she started pointing and grabbing at things by using word association. Saying the word and signing at the same time. By the time she was 9 months old she was able to sign several words (hurt, grapes, juice, hello, goodbye to name a few.) Sadly I never learnt enough to teach her more and I certainly never knew any when I had my first three children. My 5th child has learnt alot more signing from school. He is five and a half and i'm surprised by how much he knows. I think it most definetely helps bridge communication barriers with those who use it use it primarily. We all know some sign language without even thinking about it.
