if i really can't sleep I sometimes use something that came out a hypnosis textbook. It usually works and is relatively fast. When you want to sleep, look around you and mentally pick out and say five things you can see, then flick to five things you can hear, then five things you can feel. Then you do the same again but with four then three then two then one, each time trying to find less and less obvious sights, sounds or sensations. When your eyes want to be closed just carry on but with mental pictures(or use memory to pick out sights of the room your in). The quick change from one sense to the other with increasing detail is the important part. This has worked for me so I would be interested to know if it could help anyone else?
