Do you think cell phones should be allowed in schools?

If so, why? I was sitting in my math class, and listening to the kids in front of me talk about the fact that someone had texted them the answers to the test. I told the teacher, but they had deleted the proof and thus couldn't be punished. Then again, there was an accident on school grounds where a cell was used to call the proper authorities...

Cell phones shouldn't be allowed only in class but when they are out of class on their breaks. They should be allowed to use them. If they were allowed in class or going to class The kids would not even listen or they would go to class.

the problem being in the fact that although some might abide , many wouldn't and would keep the cell phones on during class, which brings the whole problem thing in.

I definitally think cell phones should be allowed in school. I think they should be kept OFF in your pocket however. That way...there will be no cheating yada yada, but if an emergency comes up, they can turn it on as use it. Kids will be kids though, and if its suppose to be turned off it wont. Just the way it works. But I do think they should be able to bring cell phones to school.

I absolutely agree with you, but it's hard to really enforce that. You can have a phone on and on complete silence, where it won't even be vibrating an alert when you get a call or text message. I agree wtih you totally that kids are going to be kids, if you tell them not to do something then they will probably do it. I like the idea of having a cell phone on campus, though, because you never know what could happen. Unfortunately, there are tragedies that happen on school campuses, so the phones could be useful. I hate to use this as an example, but having a cell phone could help children get in contact with parents if a shooting occurs, or if a tornado hit (like earlier in this year). It's a touchy subject because there are legitimate pros and cons for it.

There was a teacher I had that said if he heard a phone ring and no one confessed to it the whole class would get docked a certain amount off a test or something. If the person came forward than they only got the deduction. I think there will always be cheaters whether they do it with there cells or by some other means it will always happen. Personally I don't think they should be allowed to be used on school grounds it is not like they have they need to call someone in the middle of the school day or class.

I strongly concur with you. I am pretty sure there is nothing important that will cause a student to talk on a cell phone during class or during school. I believe it should be banned or if not should be prohibited during school hours until after school. If a student needs to make a phone call during school, that is why the school office is available to make phone calls. In our case, each of our classrooms have one telephone just in case a student needs to use it.

Cell phones should definitely be banned from school. It distracts students from their primary aim of learning what is taught in the school.

In my opinion cellphones should not be allowed to bring in school. Maybe some parents thinks it's for emergency use but much better if they just call the school if there is an emergency or if they really need to talk to their children. So they don't need to bring cellphones anymore.

I dont think it should be allowed to have them on during class, but during breaks I dont see the big problem. As long as they keep them in their schoolbags during classes, I think its alright

With each new change in technology comes new responsibilites and challenges. How we address the changes is a bigger issue then the change itself. Do we keep applying old ideas and beliefs?

I work in schools, and kids there are not allowed to carry cell phones. They make it too easy for kids to cheat, as you described, and they are disruptive; can you imagine a teacher trying to teach when kids' cell phones keep ringing? I think for safety reasons, staff members can carry cell phones or radios, but not students.

In my school, if a teacher would hear a cell phone ringing they would take the phone, and keep it with them til class was over, and got a detention. The ringing phones stoped real fast.

carrying cell phones inside the campus is permissable but it must be turned off during the class much better if the teacher will collect it and return to them after class session.though cell phones can be a great help but not during the classes nor during the examination.when the cell phone ring during the class discussion it can disturb student and teachers attention. students must be responsible when using there cell phones they must know when is the proper time and place to use there cell phones.....

No, cell phones should not be allowed in schools, It should palin and simple be PROHIBITED. I believe school is a temple of education and knowledge, a place where you can concentrate your mind and work hard for a good future. Where does the need of a cell phone come into picture, It is definitely not helping you to concentrate , instead its like an obstacle of diverting your attention. I hope they just cut it off from schools. You can and will use it in future there is time for everything and you should not forget that.

I probably think it should be allowed, but not in class and during class. Cell phones should be surrendered to the professor/teacher before class so as not to provoke cheating in class. I think schools should set rules like this. This is the same in my school, although there are still some who do not follow.

Well although it is possible that a cell phone could help in an emergency, I still don't agree with its use in schools. Nothing wrong with taking the cell to school - my kids did it because I needed to stay in touch with them after school sometimes - providing that they are left in the locker and only taken out at the end of the school day. Other than a means of cheating - as you describe - there are also the problem of stealing, which is more common that what it appears, disruption= when allowed to ring in classes- etc. I have to say that some parents are to blame here as well. There are at least two cases in my school where the kids feel justified in keeping the cell phone with them in case mom needs to get in touch with them - and mom confirms this - If "Mom" needs to get in touch with them during school time, she can do it trough the proper channel which is call the school office and leave a message if this is allowed or - since some schools prefer not to take messages in case there are mistakes - call the school and explain that it is necessary to speak with the student. All schools will do this, so no need whatsoever for those moms to instigate in the kids the idea that " yes there are rules but they don't apply to me". As for the case where the cell phone was actually important in calling for help for an emergency in school grounds... I can understand that. I guess it depends what kind of level.. in an elementary school there will be no one in the grounds other than at proper recess times which are supervised and teachers have either a cell phone or a walkie talkie to communicate with the office for fast emergency. At higher levels I can see more people outside in the school grounds at times and I'm not sure of what a solution would be - allow the cell phones only outside the school buildings? It could be to complicated in terms of getting the cell from the locker just when going outside the building/s. - I don't know if I would trust students to keep the cell off while inside and turning it on outside. A few would do it, but many wouldn't. HOw about something like the hospitals, where cell phones won't work once you're in? a bit drastic but maybe a solution LOL

i graduated at a time when mobiles were just becoming popular, so i didn't really have any problems with them. but i'd say the best thing to do would be to ban them from class, since if there is an emergency the teacher is there and can call for help, but no one can cheat in tests. that way you can still have them outside of class :)

my school was a bit strict on this cellphone issue. they wouldn't allow students to bring cellphones inside or outside the class. once you are caught using a cellphone it will be confiscated and only parents/guardians can get it back. according to teachers, it can disrupt classes and students concentration. it can even be a cause of temptation to steal and be envy to one another. in my own opinion i think it shouldn't be allowed only inside the class. cellphone is considered as a basic necessity nowadays. we just need to use it wisely.

I think cellphones should be allowed just for emergency cases but should be turn off in schools or on silent mode and no one is allowed to use it during school hours..

In my country, Malaysia students go to boarding schools and normal school schools. In boarding schools, cell phones should be allowed as parents can greatly help them with their academic/personal problems. But unfortunately their teachers are very strict as they believe students tend to misuse them. In normal schools cell phones should be banned.
