When I'm in college, I put my phone to silent, but at work sure have too keep it on. I think in most jobs, one part of the job is to take calls from clients, colleagues, bosses or whoever.

ya, i do put my cell phone on silent mode at my work places, but when sometimes in meeting i do switch it off or leave it on my table and don't carry it to the meeting room. As i have cellphone from past 3 years, when i was in college life i kept my cellphone on silent mode always and never see if anyone called during my study hours. i always checked my phone when i was free or in the break or after the college and called the necessary person to know what was the matter when i was called by him\her. as i now i am working in a company here also i keep my phone always on silent as i don't want that anyone else get distracted from it, as they may be doing some necessary works, and when there is a call on my cell, i move out to the corridor saying excuse to others and answer the call. as its very necessary to know the necessity of others also, so we should note that others don't get distracted from their work due to us so i always do it and when ever its very necessary to switch it off then do that also.

I teack CPR and First Aid classes, and our company travels to teach onsite for our clients. Whenever I'm conducting a class, My phone is off. But it goes back on the second my class is over. I figure my clients are paying me to teach them, not for me to be on the phone. I however don't require the people in my classes to turn theirs off. Most of the time I'm teach in an office building setting, and I understand buissness for them must go on. I just try to work around it as much as possible

I keep it silent when there is a meeting. I think it's polite to do if we keep our cellphone in silent when at school or meeting. At work... it depends, I think cell phone also important for our work, so it shouldm't be silent, except if you are in important meeting with clients or your boss

I usually just keep my phone in my purse and in my desk so when it rings it doesn't bother anybody. If I'm expecting an important call and have my phone sitting on my desk I either turn the ringer off or put it on the lowest ring. I think there's nothing wrong with taking the phone to class with you in case there's an emergency or you're expecting an important call. As long as you have it set to silent mode it shouldn't bother anybody.
