How do I know if my child has ADHD or Is he just hyperactive?

I am so confused because I don't know why he is so hyper. How can I calm him down? My son just turned 5. He is full of energy, immature, cry baby, silly, sweet, hyper, and academically gifted. In preschool he has a hard time focusing in group activities and he goes to time out everyday for acting silly, talking, explaining why he did something, which is interpreted as talking back in school, or copying his friend's behavior. He only goes to preschool 3 days a week for 3 hours.I don't want to put him on medications, what are my alternatives?

You should discuss this with your childs teachers as well as his doctors. There are a couple of simple test that can be done to find out.

He will have his physical next month. Last year his doctor said that he don't think that he has it, he is just very active. His teacher brought that ADHD to my attention the thought of it is getting on my nerves.

Your childs doctor knows him better then his teacher but you should bring up the teachers complaints to the doctor. That way you know for sure. The more physical actvites you give your child the less active he will be. My son is ADHA and ODD . I use medicine to medicate him during the school year but when he isn't at school I keep him active. We ride bikes , play kick ball, take long walks. We do anything to help him burn energy. I have found that the physical things I do with him the less he acts out.

That's a good idea. I am going to try to get him to be more active by taking him to the ymca and to the park more often. Maybe that will help him to burn off his extra energy.

Hi!(",)As they say, children are naturally hyperactive but, thereis a limitation to it. Since you are not yet sure if your child has ADHD, I suggests that you go to a child psychologist or a pediatrician for an assessment. If it is found out that your child does have ADHD,then you have to follow the doctor's order on what do to.As long as you are not sure yet, better have the child checked.(",)

He's going to the pediatrician next month for his physical again. I hope he does not have ADHD,maybe it's just a stage.
