Have you ever given money to a homeless person?

We've all seen them, holding signs and sitting on the corners. Have you ever stopped and given them money? If so, what made you do it? If you just pass them by, what made you do that?

I used to do this a lot. I would just give to anyone who was asking. Then I started hearing about people who did this, but had no desire to find a real job and just begged all day. Or they were not really injured they just sat in a wheelchair. So I stopped, and now I give my money to church. Usally organizations have away to sift through the no so helpless people and give to those really in need.

Good point. When I lived in Salt Lake City, I met a few people who made more from begging than they could make at a regular job. It's sad. Because then it becomes difficult to tell who really needs the money and who is conning you for it. Giving to a church or charity who handle the homeless is a good answer.

I have given alms voluntarily for deserving people. Sympathy, and desire to help the needy might be the reason to do so.

You are very kind hearted. We hear in the world so much that people have become jaded to the point of coldness. Stay the way you are with your good heart!

On the way to picking up my wife daily from her job there's a tent city set up under the freeway exit I get off at. There is about 20 homeless people that live there. A couple families with children also. Every chance I get I give them a few dollars or a handful of change. Whatever I can afford at that time. I was in the same situation many years ago so that's why I give freely. I've even taken them some of my old blankets last winter. Thanks for this discussion also. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!

When you come upon a situation where there are families with children and elderly people it is hard to not help. I hope that someone helped you and that the help you give blesses you. You are a good and caring person.

I was leaving Wal-mart (evil I know) one day and there was an older man at the corner. I gave him a few dollars. It is the only time I have done that. I was new in town at the time. As time went by I noticed that there are always people waiting on that corner and they are usually the same people. I just don't have the money to give to them all of the time.

Your heart was in the right place. It's just too bad that so many take advantage.

yes but i have to evaluate them and there's a happy, light, warm feeling inside me because i shared my blessings especially to beggars who has nothing and nowhere to get their needs and a single penny is valuable to them. my desire to help others made me do it and i want them also to experience a better life.

I'm sorry you feel depressed. I hope you start feeling better! Don't give up on the homeless because of a few bad eggs. There are more people who need help than there are swindlers. Maybe you should donate to a church or organization who handles the needs of the homeless. Atleast then you'll know you weren't cheated and you really have helped someone.

so many times. i sometimes pass by this one street downtown and i always notice this very old couple who always stay and stick to that area. one time i dropped a few coins. my heart was touched by an angel probably , i dropped more coins because i saw them eating barbequed bananas during lunch time. i mena 'is that all they're going to eat..?'

Your coins may have helped to buy them a warm meal or a hot cup of coffee. You are obviously compassionate or you wouldn't have dropped the coins. There is great goodness in people no matter what the media would have us to believe with the horrible nightly headlines. The blessings you have given will return to you. Whether it be the satisfaction of knowing that you touched the life of a stranger or in some other way. Goodness is never wrong. Bless you.

Honestly I can't say what I would do . I would like to think I would try to help someone out but don't know for sure as I have never seen a homeless person before as there is nothing like that where I live and when we do go away have never seen it elsewhere even though I have been told if you go on certain streets at night , it is a common site . I think it is so sad that anyone would feel that they had to live on the streets and it makes you wonder what kind of life they have led that makes them feel this is there only option . Where are their families and how could anyone let someone live on the street ? I believe I would try to give them something even if it was enough to get a cup of coffee to warm them up . My sister lives in an area where they see this and I love her idea where at Christmas time her children give up something they no longer use and take this in to give to other's who are less fortunate like people on the streets . It teaches them how even though as a child it is hard to imagine that other's have less then you that it is true there are so many less fortunate then us in life . Even a jacket or a blanket you no longer use could mean something so much to someone else .

Your sister sounds like a wonderful, caring parent. I try to find out why the people I have helped are in the situation they are in. Not to be nosy, but to see if I can help further. I don't understand why there are so many homeless. It breaks my heart to know that there are people without a warm home and the basics to survive.

yes i have, i have also bought food for them too. i give when im able. if i pass someone who is in obvious need and i have that little bit of change or even a few dollars in my purse or pocket, i give it. simply because they need it, and i have it available at the moment. if your a good and caring person, helping others when you're able. then good things will come to you in the end...no matter what the afterlife turns out to be like.

I agree. We have to help one another to survive this life. You can change a life and not even realize it with the help you give. Bless you.

Hi! In our country, there are many homeless people asking for alms in the streets. I always give money to the old ones. I keep thinking what could have made them turn to the streets. Maybe their families threw them out. Even if there are shelters for the aged, they still opt to be out in the streets. I pity the old people.

It's so sad to see anyone without a home. Especially the very young and the elderly. I know that some people do choose to live on the streets and I don't understand it. I just do what I can to help.

I always stop and give them some money if i have any. never very much, but I think it would be really cruel not to help somebody who is in need, when all their asking for is a little bit of money that i won't even miss, and they need it so much! Sure, there are some that are cheaters, lazy people etc, but i would much rather hand over some money to someone like that than judge them all and leave somebody in need. I know how it feels to be really poor. not homeless, but fo a few months i was so poor sometimes I had to steal some food- even then, i'd give some of that food to this homeless guy who was a lot worse off than me, because that's how i would want to be treated if i was a homeless person.
