We have a "foster pup" right now that was rescued from a puppy mill. He is so adorable BUT he loves to chew cords. He's a terrier mix, not sure what else he has with him. Cute as a button but has already ruined 3 cords. Not only do I not want him to ruin the cords, but I am afraid that he will get hurt chewing on one that is live!!!!! How do you stop a puppy from chewing cords?

He certainly does seem ever so adorable. have you looked into those cable tidiers by JML. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Cable-Wire-Tidy-Cover-2-Metres-JML-Type-New_W0QQitemZ230110727287QQcategoryZ67858QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem That is a link for the UK ones and you can see what they are but I couldn't seem to find them on the US site. I imagine they are called osmething different there. Good luck with him.

I think these would just make him feel like we gathered them up for a smorgasbord of wires!!!! LOL They are nice though to keep them all in one spot and perhaps not so tempting. Thanks!

Well it would mean that he had plastic round all the wires so he could chew on that without damaging the wires.

I KNOW! You can chew the cords first. Then he'll have nothing left to chew. What would you do without me?

Spray the chord with white vinegar (not near the plugs if they are electric cords of course). Make sure he has plenty of rawhide sticks available. The vinegar will leave an unpleasant smell for him when it dries, but you will not smell it.

Have you tried a sour apple spray? You can buy it at most pet stores, or even Walmart I believe. Dogs hate the taste and you can use it without having to "beat" the dog.

Oh I'd never beat them anyways. I pretty much treat my pets like I do my kids. I've rarely even raised a hand to my kids. My son probably more so because he's just more physical with me.. .but even with him you could count on one hand the number of times I've used physical force on them. I will yell and shake the finger and make them know I'm angry (to the pet.. not the kids.. LOL) and that usually shakes them up enough to get them to remember. I hate to see dogs flinch when someone's hand goes up. It just makes me so sad.

This is not going to be an easy job..puppies are champion chewers. 1) I assume you are crate training your dog - this means if you can't be watching the dog, you can crate it...this will prevent the bad behavior from becoming a habit. 2) Get some nylabones or kongs...not greenies, cow toes, or rawhide chews or pigs ears-these last 4 items can result in choking or other medical problems. As soon as the pup approaches your wires, yell loud NO! and then immediately give the appropriate chew toy. There are other things that you can use - there is spray stuff that you can get at the pet store I forget what it is called, yo cal also use vinegar - they say dogs don;t like it ..but my guys get it every meal and they like vinegar, you can also try putting tabasco sauce on the cords. But I prefer stopping the behavior before it starts. I used to socialize puppies all of the time - and this the top paragraph was what I did

Unfortunately this one cannot crate train. I've always crate trained all my dogs until this one but he came from a puppy mill that basically put him in a crate/pen and left him there. He will and does pee and poop in it, chews on it, whatever. He was bored in it and obviously never came out. If you could have seen the look he gave us when he touched grass! LOL It was priceless. The lack of using the crate is what is killing me!

I am old fashioned when it comes to raising dogs. A lot of people say it is wrong to give your dog a good thwoop. Crazy thing is I don't remember dogs being so aggressive, til about 5 years ago when someone decided, it was immoral to punish a dog. Then they said it about children and now children are spoiled brats. What ediot thought of this???? lol. Anyway, I would show him what he is doing wrong and give him a good thwoop on the bottom. After 3 or so times he will get the picture.

Dogs and kids alike have moments when a good thunk is needed, I agree! IF I see him chewing I thwap his nose and tell him no but he usually does it when I'm not looking!!!!! Just like the kids! LOL

You could buy this stuff that you brush on nails to stop kids from biting their finger nails, it is very bitter and brush it on the cords, (it is a clear polish), or you can do what I have to do with my cats, and that is, I get a big glob of VICKS, rub it in my hands and run my hands all over the cords and it works! The cats won't go near anything with VICKS on it. I also rub some around the sides and tops of my flower pots, so the cats won't get the urge to (nibble) the flowers!

Well I have to tell you... my cats LOVE Vicks! They love the minty scent and anytime we use Vicks or any minty balm at all they go crazy and lick the area!!!! LOL So either your cats are crazy or mine are (ok, I vote mine simply because it seems to be the nature of my house in general! LOL). Then again they've said cats hate foil, put it around where they go potty... wrong! LOL Mine poop ON the foil. Evidently they like the shimmer on their littel booties or something! lol

nero being hugged by my five year old daughter - hERE HE IS HAVING A CUDDLE, HE LOOKS RELAXED AND HAPPY WHEN HE IS IN COMPANY, BLESSED BE
awwwwww he looks gorgeous. We had this problem with our rescue labrador, Nero. He has abandonment issues and whenever we left him alone even for a few minits he would attack the telephone wiring in the house. We had it all covered in so he couldnt get at it. We left him alone for 15 minits, no more. He got behind the computer and ripped the usb coard instead lol. Eventually we worked out that he cant be left in the house so he comes everywhere with us now, saves money in the long run blessed be

I think you should put your puppy on a cage for a week so that it will not destroy your cords,

any of the sprays previously suggested would work or you could just find some way to block off the cords or move them out of his reach.

I know cayenne pepper help stop mt puppy from digging why dont you try some drops of hot sauce. Even if it dries it should still leave some residue or taste.

This is very natural for puppies. You cannot stop them from chewing considering that their teeth are beginning to grow. The best thing you can do is place all the chords on a higher level. A place where they cannot reach it. That's what I did to my chords when my dogs are still puppies

Hey. Charlie is sooo cute!! I had this same problem with my puppy. But she was worse cause she would bite on everything! It was bad because I had just gotten new furniture and she was chewing on the legs and leaving marks on them. She was also bad about biting the corners on the cabinets... and not to mention anything that I forgot to pick up out of the floor (shoes!!). I bought some Bitter Yuck from PetSmart and sprayed it on everything!! She took one bite on something and she quit! She hated it that bad. Poor thing she started coughing and ran to her water bowl but it at least it taught her to not bite on things!!

bad behavior in pets is hard to deal with witout the proper tools, I recomand you buy the dog somthing else to chew on, a toy that will keep him from dowing harm like a bone or someting
