Mayonnaise or Miracle Whip?

This seesm to be a "war" with cooks everywhere. Those who swear by their mayo would never think to use Miracle Whip. And likewise, those who enjoy their Miracel Whip think mayo is too heavy and unhealthy. I personally like both for sandwiches, but for cooking or salads (like potato salad) I always use mayonnaise. What do you prefer? Do you completely dislike the other?

I like Miracle Whip, but it is not because Mayo is too heavy and unhealthy, it is because I find it too bland. Even for potato salad, I prefer Miracle Whip with maybe some plain yoghurt mixed with it plus some mustard. I have not tried mayonnaise for cooking and since I make my own mayonnaise, that would be a problem since we only use Olive Oil for cooking and that is a bit expensive.

I think you brought up a good point though-that mayonnaise is alot more unhealthy than Miracle Whip. I don't even look to use Miracle Whip in recipes, mainly because I have grown quite accustomed to just plain old mayonnaise, and my fiance would not even touch anything made with Miracle Whip. I think Miracle Whip dominate the Midwestern states though (although I could be wrong.) It is really all I ever saw being used back home, but now that I live in California, everyone seems to use mayonnaise out here. What do you think?

I definitely prefer mayonnaise. In fact, I absolutely hate miracle whip....it is too sweet. I never use the stuff. It would be a "miracle" if someone made something with it, and I actually liked it. Maybe that's why they call it miracle whip.

I wonder how they can be similar to each other but then be so different. You are right, Miracle Whip is really sweet, but I think it tasts good with turkey and swiss for a nice variation of mayo. Although for the most part I do use mayo more.

I find them both disgusting! My husband only eats Miracle Whip, though. He doesn't like the tast of Mayo. My mom cooks with both. She prefers Miracle Whip but my dad like mayo. My little sister still lives at home and doesn't eat either of them. I don't cook anything with either of them. My husband makes potato salad every once in a while and of course always uses Miracle Whip. I don't even like the way it smells.

LOL that is funny. I grew up with Miracle Whip and back then thought mayonnaise had a funny taste. Then for the last several years i have only used mayonnaise. I recently bought a small tube of Miracle Whip just to see if I would even like it, and I did!

I think you hit the nail on the head. It is WAR against the dressing/miracle whip faction! I really never use miracle whip unless we are out of mayo. I think it tastes oddly sweet (miracle whip), so I never use it on sandwiches. My mother never used it for potato salad, and when I make potato salad I'm usually trying to recreate mom's. My BF keeps a little jar of miracle whip in the fridge for his sandwiches, he says that mayo is just too fatty. I think the only thing I like it on is chilli cheese dogs. I know it sounds gross, it helps the bread stay not soggy for a little longer. I actually hated mayo until a few years ago. Something about the consistency really grossed me out. But now I can't imagine a turkey sandwich without it.

I grew up on Miracle Whip, and then when I was on my own, I learned nearly all of my friends preferred mayonnaise. So I completley abandoned Miracle Whip and wen t full force with the mayo, as the taste was quite different and I too liked it better on a turkey sandwich. I just recently bough a small squeeze bottle of Miracle Whip, thinking I haven't had it on a snadwich in years. It was delicious! The last 3 turkey snadwiches I have had I have used Miracle Whip. LOL I will blame the off the wall craving or change of taste due to being pregnant. :)

Wow-I didn't think anyone would answer with a neither!! LOL Do you prefer just mustard on your sandwiches, or do you prefer other sauces or dressings? (Or plain?)

Hi, princess07031980. I like to eat both types of mayonnaise. I prefer regular mayonnaise for my sandwiches, and Miracle Whip salad dressing mayonnaise, for any pastas or salads that I may eat.

I like both. I actually buy based on what is on sale.
