Technology has been advancing so fast that the old bulky dictionaries we used to carry all along when we were still in grade school ages back, are now replaced with the stylish, handy and more convenient electronic dictionaries. What reference material do you have on your desk at home? or on your children's school bags or study table? is it the old book dictionary or the new stylish electronic dictionary? Since when have you shifted use of dictionaries? Is it because of the convenience and other useful features of these electronic dictionaries like the pronunciation aides, calculator, language translations, mp3 etc. that made you decide to give up your book dictionary or it's just because of the current trend and wanting to be "in"?or if you haven't got one of these electronic dictionaries yet, are you considering of getting one soon? do share your thoughts:P

I have used the electronic dictionary in the past ,primarily for the language translator option, but that was because I needed it to converse with a person who didn't know English . I still have the book dictionary and often use it.The electronic dictionary doesn't always have all the words, especially the ones that were regarded as slangs ,but were later included in the book dictionaries.I think with more features added to the electronic ones, the book dictionaries might have to go at some point.

True, I also fear that with the seemingly useful added features on the elctronic dictionaries, the old ones will just be a thing in the past.

I go over the internet to get brief, concise definition of words or terms. I usually check over www.merriam-webster.com. It has voice feature that you could hear how words are correctly pronounced.

I have to admit that I still prefer the hard back edition of my faithful dictionary and thesaurus, I suppose it's what you get used to, I prefer to have the books than on the computer, I used to read a lot before the internet came along so I feel that I should keep reference books, otherwise I'd never have a book in the house which makes you more lazier.

It is actually easier to open a new window and use them free with the internet. I do use the hardcover for scrabble though.

Yeah, I often use them too when am online. But there's another electronic dictionary that can be brought anywhere you like. It's more handy and most people using it are the language students, like here, the korean students who are studying english are always bringing with them their electronic dictionaries wherever they go, even at the malls, movie houses etc.

I used to have one of this nifty little inventions. It was a translator, that was back in the day when I was still learning English. It was a wonder to have in class. It helped me through all my exams, without having to carry a 1 kilo dictionary! Sadly it's long gone, my daughter found it not long ago and she used it as a teething toy. I guess she found a new use for it too, huh! :P

I have the good old bulky dictionary at home and use it only once in a while :P The reason, I use the online dictionary. I don't have an electronic dictionary and am surely not planning to buy one. I'd rather use my huge book, its fun looking for words..hehe! In the process I come across new and bizarre words ;)

Well actually in regards to a dictionary I prefer to use my book dictionary, as I have a couple the main ones that I use are the normal one and also a medical dictionary. And then I have another one with two languages inside to explain in English and my husband's language which is Tongan. I do have an electronic dictionary on my computer but I do not use it that much.

I have the dictionary as a link at the top of my browser! While we do have two hardback dictionaries in the house, I'm not sure when either was last opened. My teen children also have the dictionary as a link on their browswers! Should I be writing anything, it would certainly be via the computer, so I don't know when I would run for the hard copy of the dictionary now! But I just can't get rid of my hardback dictionaries. For some reason it seems just wrong to not have them in the house!

I have my reliable old dictionary with me. But I also go to online dictionary in case I'm lazy to browse through my book. Lately though, I'm using the book dictionary more because of some problem with my online connection. :)

I am now hooked on dictionary.com My son used it for school, and I always told him to get the paper dictionary out, until I tried it myself. Hard to go back now!

Yes ok, I am stuck in the dark ages but I do prefer my paper dictionary. I think the electronic ones are a great idea and very helpful but it was what I used whe I wa at school and am comfortable with, on the plus side for the electronic ones, they do save on paper and trees.

If I am on the computer or near it and it is on I will look something up there. But I still have a book dictionary because you NEED one to play scrabble and I LOVE scrabble! Plus it is good for when your computer is off. I don't have an electronic dictionary though, just the computer.

I don't use electronic dictionary at the the moment but i heard it has lots of advantages over those old huge books. Technology has greatly advanced so lots of small electronic stuffs are there but i am not the type of person who goes shopping for electronic stuffs. Anyway i 'll try that next time when i go out for shopping

I have a book dictionary, but if the computer is turned on I will generally lok up a web based dictionary. I guess I am becoming more and more computer dependent.
