How you feel when you are giving something to somebody for free, like charity?

According to spiritual books, it has been said that the more you give, the multiplied you get in return. More than anything else, you should have the heart to give to others. But how do you feel when you are giving money to beggars or to charity? Do you feel materialistic? Or do you think it's no problem at all and give to him thinking he is in more need than you? I personally feel quite comfortable in giving to people, maybe because I believe in spiritual things and has been practicing meditation for more than 1 year. I want to view your opinion in this.

I actually don't give money to beggars; the cynic and skeptic in me both remind me that there are beggars who routinely make $40k-$50k per year doing what they do (think about one of those guys who sits on a freeway offramp in Vegas; if just one person gives him $5 every ten minutes, he's making $30 an hour, and if he does that for eight hours, he's making $240 a day). However, I *do* donate goods and time. Instead of throwing away clothes that don't fit anymore, I donate them to thrift stores (I prefer to donate to thrift stores that are not religiously affiliated, but the Salvation Army has gotten donations from me in the past regardless) if they're still in good shape. The same goes for books, electronic gadgets, light fixtures, etc. As far as time goes, I volunteer from time to time as well, at humane societies, to help with elections, etc. I don't really donate things like that to "feel good" about helping others. I do lots of things to help people out when I'm able; I figure adding a little bit of good to the universe isn't going to hurt anything :) I'm not chasing a particular goal ("earn karma, get payback," etc.), but it sure feels nice to put a smile on someone's face. It might come back to benefit me someday, or it might not. Doesn't bug me much either way. There's enough nastiness and suffering in the world that it feels good to chip away at it a little bit to add some "happy" to the mix.

You are right. we should not give money to beggars. But we should donate for the good of the whole world. We should donate to the needy, not the ones tagged beggars.

I feel good whenever I can help someone else out. If it is by money or donating clothes or furniture etc... Anything I can do I would gladly do it to help others. But right now I am not in a money situation to donate money but I can still give my old clothes and things like that

It seems that your are a very good hearted person, helping people whenever you can. God shall always help you in need, if you maintain this clean attitude.
