Would You Consider Gastric Bypass Surgery

I have a friend who is very overweight and is seriously considering gastric bypass surgery (getting her stomach stapled) to lose weight. I know people who have done it with little or no ill effects. They are healthier and happier, thinner, and living normal lives. I also know other people who have done it and had serious problems, including almost bleeding to death, inability to eat more than a teaspoonful of food without throwing it up, all kinds of horror stories. I know people who have had the surgery and then eventually gained almost all of the weight back because they didnt really modify their eating habits and eventually stretched their stomachs again by overeating. How do you feel about it? would you consider having it done? have you had it done or know someone who has?

i have talked to people that have had it done and they were in pain for awhile and i dont like pain. i have thought about doing that and lap band but to get the insurance to pay i need to try other things for at least a yr. im under doctors care. i am doing dietary supplement and at the same time trying to eat healthier.

I also have a close family friend that is going ahead and having it done in May. I personally wouldn't do it, but I really haven't been over weight enought to even consider it. I think it is a decision that should be made by everyone that may be close to or involved in the persons life. Eating habit must be changed and the people close to them must help them along their journey by helping them eat right. This is a big decision and must be taken serioisly. Good luck to your friend.

I have been considering it for some time now. I know 2 people who have had it done and they are looking wonderfull. I just need to get my self a physician so I can get a standard exam so I can discuss this to them as an option.

I have given this alot of thought myself as i gained up to over 315 lbs . I have been hearing more bad about the gastric bypass tho than good . Lapband surgery is an option as well, is less of a risk and removable if it needs to be .Luckily i have been able in the last few weeks to start losing some weight, and have made some modifications in the way we eat at home. Good luck to your friend in whatever she decides to do.

This surgery usually involves a 4- to 6-day hospital stay (2 to 3 days for a laparoscopic approach). Most people can return to their normal activities within 3 to 5 weeks. Everybody likes their body in good shape but..... Gastric bypass surgeries may cause dumping syndrome. This occurs when food moves too quickly through the stomach and intestines. It causes nausea, weakness, sweating, faintness, and possibly diarrhea soon after eating. These symptoms are made worse by eating highly refined, high-calorie foods (like sweets). In some cases you may become so weak that you have to lie down until the symptoms pass. common to all surgeries for weight loss include an infection in the incision, a leak from the stomach into the abdominal cavity or where the intestine is connected (resulting in an infection called peritonitis), and a blood clot in the lung (pulmonary embolism). About one-third of all people having surgery for obesity develop gallstones or a nutritional deficiency condition such as anemia or osteoporosis. I am not fat and don't need this surgery but even if i am very fat also i won't take the risks mentioned above.

I think I would only ever consider this as a desperate last measure. I know an ex friend of my partners had it done. He was terribly overweight and wanted it doing. He had no desire to change his eating habits or exercising. He wanted a quick fix. He got a lot of attention from his online friends on his blog after he had it done, all saying how brave he was and everything. The thing is, he's still eating fast food (McDonalds) three times a week and so surely, he'll regain most of the weight he hoped to lose. I find it pretty disgusting that he would put himself through major surgery to save his life, and then go back to the same eating habits that got him so big in the first place.

I'm a fat person and if I will come to a situation where I become too overweight and needs a remedy or else I will die maybe I will consider that if all else fails. Of course I will try first the organic and natural way but that would mean alot and lots of work and dedication. I think people who really made their mind in being in this kind of surgery should be really sure of the decision and aware that surgery alone won't solve the problem. Like those people you mention who give up, maybe they are not really ready for a change.

I had gastric bypass almost two years ago. Do I regret it? That's a loaded question. I love that I lost 150 lbs. I am no longer diabetic and no longer have high blood pressure. However, I also have had problems with eating. I've had to have four endoscopies (scope down the throat and a balloon to stretch the opening to my intestines opened back up - had a stricture) not to mention I still get sick when I eat. Things I should be able to eat (chicken, turkey) I can't eat. They make me sicker than a dog. Things I shouldn't be able to eat (beef, milk, sweets) I can tolerate. I have to be careful how much sugar I take in as I still "dump" (which is throwing up or having diarrhea) if I eat very much of it. I can't even tolerate water! All I can drink is milk, which makes a lot of bypass patients sick.

yes I would consider it as Im partially disabled and would find it hard the weight any other way. However my partner would not be happy if I went ahead with it as she loves me just the way I am and even loves my wobbly bits. I have heard horror stories about it but still don't know what to think as there are positives and negatives to everything in life.

Well if i have the resources and after a careful deliberation with an experienced doctor, yes i think i will consider gastric bypass surgery .It so hard to loose weight even if you are only overweight 20 pounds. So for me that is the best way.

Not at all. I would rather suggest regular exercise, dieting and cheerfulness.

Ido not know anyone who has had gastric bypass. I think that it can work for some but they have to realize that they still have to change they way they eat and live. If they have to change the way they eat and live anyway why have the surgery.

I think that is one of the craziest things a person will ever do to reduce weight. It's better to modify your eating habits and take some exercise. I'll advice you to take more of dietary fibers(more vegetables) which will give you fullness without increasing your weight as it is not high calorie food.Besides this you can take a walk for around at least 15mins in morning or afternoon as this is not such a difficult thing to do.

I think if it were a health issue it would be a plausible alternative. If she's not careful, her eating habits may cause her stomach to stretch and this problem will arise once again. However, I'd recommend losing weight the old-fashioned and healthy way. By doing this, she can lose weight, have toned body, healthy eating habits, and a have a healthier lifestyle overall.

My sister-in-law had this surgery. She had to watch what she ate for over a year or she'd be sick. She avoid them foods and now can eat pretty much what she wants. She gained her weight while she had cancer, not from over eating, so if your friend does have this surgery and she got that way from over eating, if she don't change her eating habits it is a waste of time. There are also alot of other things to consider and she sould seek out all the information she can get on it. I wish your friend luck. I personally don't need one myself, but would consider it if I was over weight where it was affecting my health.

I really do not know if I would do it or not, I have thought about it and I am still unsure if I would do it.

i dont know much about it but i shud suggest that a surgery is a surgery, small or big. it should always be avoided. excersise is much better option, n following diet charts can do wonders.i myself try to stay fit. i am not at all overweight but have the tendency for the same. well i am always on hunger strike.maybe its even not good, but when i move out with my frnds or family, i do eat as much i wishn hence i keep the balance of calories.

I would like to say that no way, not ever would I consider the surgery, but being overweight does different things to different people. I know that it is not always an easy way out to have the surgery and that some people have terrible side effects. I wish your friend well and as for me, I guess I will just have to make the decision that is best for me. Great Topic !

I have thought about having this surgery before but never too seriously. I'm overweight but I'm also young so I figure i can just lose weight the old fashioned way diet & excercise. Besides working so hard for something it is more likely that I will keep the weight off. I've been trying to lose weight since last August so far i'm down 40 lbs and i have kept it off because I changed my lifestyle habbits. I stopped eating junk food epecially fast food and i work out everday, it's that simple. I don't think the health risks with the surgery would be worth it for someone like me. I am overweight but I don't have diabetes or heart problems so there is no reason why i can't put down the remote and cookies and go to the gym. I think that Gastric Bypass should only be used for people with serious medical problems.

I guess it depends on the amount of weight someone is carrying around! I think diet is the first attempt and if that doesnt work, then a good medical program with medication. I would think surgery should be a last resort but too many are using it for a quick fix. I know someone who had the GB 3 times and ended up eating and getting sick. Also the mental part is a concern. Another I know actually could not except his body image being slim. He became an alcholic. People hide behind their weight to avoid attention. I would vote NO on the surgery!
