My son is not so interested in math. He is now Grade Two in a primary school. He doesn't do well in maths. And maybe i should say he feels painful when dealing with a difficult maths problem. What can i do to help him? Thanks.

Well, let me introduce myself. I'm a student who loves Math like anything ! I've always loved Math and I was/am the best in my class. What inspired me to love math was that I was interested in numbers from the very beginning. I was faster than my elder brothers in the basic operations in Mathematics. When I look back and think what made me like Math, I can remember a few instances. Every since my childhood, my dad brought me Math books(not the textbooks) and he used to teach math to my brothers. Although it was a book of higher standard, I learnt and understood the basics very well from my brothers. I used to compete with them in Math. I feel that you should buy an interactive book for your kid and make him interested in it. Also encourage sports involves Math like basketball, pack of cards, or even chess. That would develop his reasoning ability and the ability to think. You need to keep him thinking and that is the age when his brain develops a lot ! Good luck ! :)

Maths is a very varied subject perhaps you could apply it so that he does not realise he is doing maths. Then he might not get so concerned and find that it sinks in more. Perhaps cooking and counting out/ weighing the ingredients and sharing the results equally. Or gardening counting out the plants or spacing them evenly. Money - pay him in pennies for his chores. Count the stairs, the railings, how many pages you will read his bedtime story. Getting him to sit down and just study when he is not good at it might just put him off. Good luck.

Many thanks for your suggestions. Actually my kid is a grade-two student. He can deal with some simple problems such as 123+34=?. However, as for some applying problems, he finds more difficulty!

Hmm.. it's just a summary lesson? I just in Senior High school.. so I don't know how to teach a kid.. but i think you can do with toy or fingers? I remembered when my teacher tought to solve math.. like 15 + 8.. "1 inside the brain.. 5 + 8 = 13.. then write 3.. then 1 + 1 = 2.. then write 2 in front of 3.." and maybe he should be given more practice? then he will remember the answer of the summary questions.. I saw some people who can't do the math, but they can remember more.. ^-^
