No, at least not in the near future. First, Windows XP, gets all the work done, and is very familiar. It is secure if users are security conscious (though not as much as Linux). It is quite stable. And you have software support and hardware support you can only dream of in Linux. Morever, it also does not have vendor support, I quite remember asking by computer dealer to give me any Linux distro, and they did not have any. The computer support person from my dealer saw Linux in use for the first time on my computer. And piracy takes away the most important commercial advantage of Desktop Linux, that of cost. Therefore, I am not at all sure that Linux will overtake Windows in the short run. It may be a possibility in a very long run though.

There is no denying the increasing popularity of many Linux distributions, and they are far more user friendly than the old command line that people still tend to associate with the name. Despite this, I find it hard to imagine that it will ever overtake Microsoft Windows, even considering the ever increasing cost of Windows. I have used several different distributions of Linux, including a few Live CD versions, but I still run Windows XP on my desktop computer. Linux may offer free software for almost every task that you wish to perform, but they are often limited and do not compare with the professional software written by many companies for Windows.

oh it is really very hard to decide which operating system is preferrable! linux gives the porgrammers the opportunity to create an operating system of their choice and they can customize it in any way they like! but windows gives user including non-technical people to use everything using the computer and it makes things so much more easier! i am not the sort of person who wants things to be designed the way i want! so i guess i would prefer windows over linux! i have tried both and i feel windows much mroe simpler to use.. but i like linux for the fact tht it doesnt crash as often and windows does!
