Accused of causing death of 5-month-old A Vine Grove grandmother has been charged with murdering her 5-month-old grandson in an Elizabethtown house fire two years ago. Barbara F. Folmar, 50, was arrested Monday and is charged with murder and first-degree arson relating to the death of Schayler Folmar. The infant died March 10, 2005, from smoke inhalation after the Monin Road home where he lived with his grandmother, mother and cousin burned. The case has been under investigation for two years by the Elizabethtown Police Department and the Elizabethtown Fire Department. “It was a tedious case,” EPD Detective Clint Turner said. “It is not one of your open-and-shut deals.” Officers would not release details from the investigation, but said the baby was found under a bed and that the fire was not caused by a methamphetamine lab explosion as a television station reported in 2005. Folmar has been a suspect since the beginning of the case. She was the only one home with Schayler at the time of the fire, Turner said. “She was the only person that made sense,” he said. Prosecutors from Nelson County took the case to a Hardin County grand jury which returned the indictment March 29. The Hardin County Commonwealth’s Attorney office could not prosecute the case because an attorney in the office represented Folmar in previous Family Court cases, Turner said. EPD has responded to previous calls concerning Folmar and her children, but there were no previous calls concerning Folmar and Schayler, Turner said. An investigative report filed in January by the Cabinet for Health and Family Services’ Office of Inspector General about Hardin County cases includes a case with details similar to the fire at the Folmar residence. The OIG report does not include names, but describes a 5-month-old infant who died in a house fire in March 2005 when the only people present at the home were the child and his grandmother. The investigative report states the child was found under a bed, the mattress was pulled over him and boxes were piled around the bed that would have prevented the infant from crawling from under the bed. According to the report, a local police official said the grandmother was a suspect and the case would be presented to the grand jury. The report also states there were previous Department for Community Based Services contacts with the grandmother. The OIG report said the child had been taken to hospitals “numerous” times with breathing difficulties but that doctors could not find anything wrong; that DCBS records showed officials believed the grandmother has Munchausen by Proxy Syndrome; and that DCBS put the baby on a breathing monitor because investigators feared the grandmother might hurt him. Munchausen by Proxy Syndrome is a psychological disorder in which a parent or caretaker intentionally makes another person n usually a child n ill to gain some form of internal gratification, such as attention. In 2005, Folmar told The News-Enterprise that Schayler was asleep in a bed next to her the night of the fire. She said she fell asleep and woke up leaning against a cabinet in the bathroom as carbon monoxide and smoke detectors sounded. She did not know how she arrived there. At the time, Folmar said she tried to save Schayler but could not get through the smoke. She also disputed claims that the child was found under the bed. “There is no way in hell that baby could have went underneath that bed,” she said in 2005. Folmar is being held at the Hardin County Detention Center in lieu of $1 million cash bond. Here is another link for the same story: http://www.thenewsenterprise.com/articles/2007/04/06/news/news01.txt The baby's name is pronounced Skyler... but she wanted the name spelled differently. How could a grandmother do this to their grandbaby?! I am outraged that this woman would do this! I grew up with Angel and always knew her mother to be a little off, if you know what I mean. But I never thought she would actually kill her grandbaby.

Did dyou know the people personally? Has done anything like this before? At any rate, it's sadd cause you dunno who you are leaving babies with. Of all people u think you could trust grandmom. I'm thankfull I was always able to stay at home with my baby girl. I've always feared someone hurting my babies so I made it a point to be home with them

Wow, it is so weird what people are doing these days. I feel for the parents of the baby. This is horrible. I hope you have really been there for your friend through this. She is going to really need people for a long long time. I cannot even imagine what she is going through!!

That is so tragic. I feel for the family. What a horrible way to die. Speaking as someone though who has mental illness in the family it does make people do strange and terrible things. I can't understand though why they would have left the baby with her knowing she had problems.

What a strange and tragic story. I hope it turns out that the Grandmother didn't do it.People do strange things when they suffer from smoke inhalation but then there is the fact she was always taking the baby in for breathing problems. How horrible and your poor friend has to live it all over now that they have charged her Mom. I wonder why she would let her Mom watch the baby if she as so unfit? Sounds like a lot of unanswered questions.

There are a lot of unanswered questions, but the fact of it is the grandmother was there and the baby was under the bed with boxes around it so the baby couldn't get out if he could crawl. It is tragic, but all signs point to her. Not to mention, the grandmothers story kept changing. Thanks for responding.
