By being simple I mean not smart enough to understand the worldly ways. That makes you vulnerable and incapable of warding off many possible harmful elements.

Possibly yes.Simplicity is a virtue that bring peace and joy to the owner and it does , but often people mistake the innocence for naivety, ignorance and foolishless and hurt the person. There are countless examples that illustrate how simplicity could be a boon and a bane. For example Cinderella who didn't see the ulterior motives of her siblings and step-mother or beauty(in beauty and the beast) who chose to stay with the beast to free her father. In fairytales the virtue ends up being rewarded ,but that isn't always the case in life. However, there are examples where simplicity didn't go unrewarded in life as well like manjunath was rewarded posthumously for his bravery and honesty.I was once told by a very dear and elderly friend of mine not to let the world corrupt the beauty of the soul even if people choose to not recognize simplicity. In todays world simplicity is rich ,but painful. You must be wise for your simplicity to keep breathing.

This is by far the best answer I've read on mylot. The examples.Just too good. The fate that Manjunath met,is the most unfortunate one and a shame to mankind.A brilliant brain and good heart, all gone waste.Yeah, the reward atleast is some solace to the family.I salute him for his courage. Yes,wisdom should accompany simplicity to keep it alive. Thanks bluewings :)

Thanks,Worhty!! Perhaps the tribulation his family suffered won't go unnoticed by the millions and hopefully there are more like him in the making. There is more power in honesty than bravery. Thanks for the BR my friend!:-)

Simplicity is a virtue and I think everyone is simple and somehow simplicity resides in everyone.I don't see how being simple can harm anyone. Its just about being simple and not just showing off and showing around.Being simple doesn't mean being weak-minded on whom another person can easily boss over. Its just about not being too loud about things.Incase you say simplicity is as good s innocence still it does no harm, because more or less people have a soft corner for "simple and innocent people" and don't tend to harm them :-)

It all depends on each person's perspective. I personally dont make much of a difference being simple or pompous because i dont take it into my head. On the other hand i take care that i dont become too simple or too heavy headed. I dont mind talking to anyone even if the person may not be status wise equal to me. I am a simple and common man's man.

It has nothing to do with status. If you can choose being simple or high headed, then i must say you are intelligent and smart.Good

I think being simple individual will not really harm her/him but will make him/her live life on the fullest without being notice in every move they make or decesion to take in life compare to a more demanding life of a star or a celebrity. Every individual faces struggle no matter how simple our life might be but with simplicity comes simple problem compare to more luxurious life and more demanding career that deals sleepless nights to think of a possible solution.
