How much money will I have to have to be granted entry into the UK?

I am hoping to immigrate to the UK in about 2-3 years. I estimate I wil be able to save between 8,000.00 & 12,000.00 GBP in that time. I am currently in the US. I will be a pahramcy tech in the US in approximately 6 months & plan on getting certified as a Pharmacy Tech in UL before I start the immigration process. I have been a caregiver(nurses aide since 2002). Will this be enough money to prove to immigration officials that I can support myself for 1 year? I have no idea what the average person makes in the UK and have heard that immigration officials have the right to put you right back on the plane if they see fit to do so. Having the illegal immigration crisis in the US has made me more aware I suppose of wanting to do things correctly from the start. Please only polite answers! Thanks so much in advance.

Thanks Donna! I have posted this question on Yahoo Answers with no joy, hopefully some out there knows. I think I should be ok if I can save aprroximately $20,000.00 US, taht's aprroximately 10,000.000 GBP, just not sure if it will actually be enough.
