good, bad, or really ugly? Can I mess up my computer by changing the video RAM allocation?

Make sure your computer is turned off and you ground yourself by touching an exterior metal part of the case. Pull out the CMOS battery from your motherboard (The small round flat lithium battery) for about 30 seconds. Replace it and power on your computer. You will probably get two options F1 to enter setup and F2 to set defaults. (It may vary a bit but should be similar). Accept the option to set defaults. That should put you back in business. At least it did for me.Before you even consider entering the BIOS menus, you need to understand just how important the BIOS settings are and how sensitive your PC is to changes in the settings. Remember, the BIOS settings tell your PC how to function. With one small change, you can confuse your PC to the point that it can no longer recognize the hard drive or find the operating system. And while many BIOS programs do have options to exit without saving changes or to return to factory defaults, neither of these options may help if you have to restore custom settings. So, feel free to look at the BIOS options and learn about them, but do not change anything without completely understanding the setting’s purpose and how your change affects the computer.
