Let's talk Bubble Gum today. hahahaha! Bubble Gums main ingrediant is a product called CHICLE. That's where ythe name CHCIKLETS come from by the way. Chicle comes from a tropical evergreen tree, native to southern North America and South America. Anyhow now for the fun part. A typicla piece of cheweing gum is more than half sugar. This is easy to prove if you have a scale that weighs grams.Weigh a pice of gum. Then chew it for 5 or 10 minutes until all the sweetness is gone from it. If you dry it off then weigh it again it will weigh less than half waht it did originally. What's left is the rubbery gum base. Most people think this is gross but you can actually reflavor old gum. It's totaslly reuseable. Hahaha!! Like rubber bands or rubber tires chicle lasts a very long time. Now why do people like gum so much? We've been chewing it for over 100 years & Americans believe it or not spend something like nearly $2 billion dollars a year buying gum. What is it thats so appealing? It turns out that moving our jaws up & down actually relaxes people. Since World War 1 the Army has been giving gum to it's soldiers because it seems to ease stress. Truck drivers chew it to help keep them awake. Studies in the last few years have shown that chewing gum may help memory recall also. Before your next big test etc. you might want to pop a pice of gum into your mouth just in case. Happy chewing etc. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB!!~

Very interesting. Never knew I was eating something from South America, well actually chewing. Anyone here ever been told not to swallow your gum because it will stay in your stomach for 10 years? Mom used to tell me that when I was a kid. I'll take your word on the weight information. I won't even go into a house that has a scale that weighs grams, if ya know what I mean..lol

Hahaha. This post made me laugh (the part about the scale that is). Mom used to tell me not to swallow my gum for that reason too. It does take a while for your stomach acids to break down a wad of gum (because of the gum base I'm assuming), but ten years seems a bit extreme. Anyway, this was a fun fact that I didn't know. I'm left with one question, though. How does one go about reflavoring a piece of gum?

My daughter takes after me in liking bubble gum so much. I could blow a very large bubble out of it and find it so much fun. I demostrated to my daughter how to blow a very large bubble and her eyes really turned sooo big in wonder. However, I would still find reflavoring bubble gum or re-using it gross.LOL. Also, I have a rule that my daughter has to follow too if she wants more supply of bubble gum and that is to never stick it anywhere (not even at places unseen!) but to throw it properly. Happy chewing too Grandpa Bob.

Olah Grandpa Bob!(",) Thank you for that very knowledgeable information that you shared with us.(",) I really don't know much about bubble gums. All I know is that its gas forming when chewed too much.(",) I missed chewing Bazooka!(",) It's my favorite because it has some kind of small comics inside. I like reading it. Thank you again for the piece of knowledge that you shared with all of us.(",) Have a great day!(",)

The comic was called "Bazooka Joe". They also offered toys etc for sending in many of the comics and cash for postage and handling. Like x-ray glasses for example. Hahahaha. Thanks for the response also.

Chewing gum also takes your mind away from smoking, Grandpa Bob. Btw, I'm now smoke-free for a week. yehhhhhhhhhh!!! Long as I have gum in my mouth, I also don't have the food cravings that tend to replace the nicotine cravings. There is also sugarless bubble gum so not all gum is full of sugar.

Woah i never new that! I love interesting facts :) I may have to start chewing since i have a memory of a goldfish (i litterly will forget something 7 seconds later). Hehe, i remember in school our science teacher scared up into not eating gum by telling us how our stomach chews on itself because your brain thinks you are eating .. Certiainly cut down on the amount of gum being dropped around school lol.

my friend i am a regular costumer of center fresh.I usually eat a lot of it most of the day.when it comes to eating this, none of my friends can compare to me.I love bubble gum because it makes your brain to run atleast when I do exams.when I drive then also it is very important stuff because everyone back is feeling dizzy and u are driving and driving. So the point is it makes your brain work when you are surrounded with dull environment. So figures up to the person who conceptulised this product.

Well that's very interesting. I like chewing gum. It's delicious. I just hate it when people chew it like cows. It's so annoying! Doesn't it bother themselves. The noise?

To tell you the truth, I have never liked bubble gum. I don't like the textures or any of the flavours. I also seeing people chewing them, & even worse, spitting them on the ground. But I guess a lot of people hate seeing me smoke! I think my aversion to bubble gum comes from not ever having been allowed to have it as a child, but also to being a teacher & seeing kids chew away, and then stick it under their desks. I didn't know many of the facts you started, especially the tree it comes from, so that is interesting.

I've been a gum chewer for many years but you sure can't get the real bubble gum we used to get it was real double bubble gum, pink in color and good grief you could hardly get one piece in your mouth until you chewed it down, the flavor lasted for a real long time and it was wrapped with a comic to read besides and one piece was one cent. When you blew a bubble it covered the whole front of your face and sometimes you wore it there. I've even had to pull it away from my hair. That was bubble gum. I wish I had a dollar for every piece I chewed. I now have false teeth so I have to be more selective as to what I chew and after 10 minutes the flavor is all gone and yet it costs way more.

Wow - just wow. How long did it take you to find all that information? LOL. I don't usually chew gum these days. I did chew it when I was quitting smoking because I needed something - heck, ANYTHING - to take my mind off the damn cravings lol. It's about the only time it's ever come in handy for me personally. My partner carries around a pack of Wrigleys Spearmint gum pieces around with him, because he says it makes a good impression on people if you have fresh smelling breath. I agree with that but I haven't had occasion to ask him for a piece lol. Mind you, I make sure I have fresh breath if we're going somewhere anyway.
