Have you ever boycotted anything? How long did it last?

I have refused to go to mcdonalds since 1983 and I don't see myself going ever again. While I was in High School I went to mcdonalds for a milkshake after playing tennis with some friends. I only had 20 dollars to my name and the shake, at that time, was less than a dollar. The cashier gave me back just a few cents in change even though I had paid with a 20 dollar bill. I asked her where the other 19 dollars was and she said I only gave her one dollar. I knew I only had a 20. The manager came over and counted her drawer, it was 18 dollars over. He still refused to give my correct change and told me to leave...after calling me a liar and a punk. He also used some pretty foul language. I went home and asked my dad for some money, as I was planning on going on my first date that night. He commented that he had given me 20 that morning and that was more than enough for dinner and a movie. I told him what heppened. He went to the restaurant and talked with the manager, whom he knew. The manager admitted treating me badly but didn't know I was his son. I decided to never go back because who I was wasn't important to me so much as how I was treated. No one should have been treatd that way, ever. I Haven't been back since. Now I am 40 and my entire family still avoids mcdonalds. What about you? Have you ever avoided a place for a long time, or even a short time? why?

There have been local businesses that I have boycotted because of poor service or dicriminatory hiring practices, but I can't think of any large chains that I have boycotted. There is one shop where I live that I won't shop at even though it carries a lot of things that interest me. I was there two of my best friend's children, and the owner tweaked out that the kids were going to harm something, even though they were behaving well and not touching anything. I even told the guy that I would gladly pay for anything they broke, I was that sure that they would behave. But he was just very rude about the entire thing, and I've never been there since.

Yelled AT your children? Wow, I would boycott too! Even if she was legitimately concerned, shouldn't she have talked to the parent instead of yelling at someone else's kids? How mean!

mcdonalds and denny's are the two places that my family boycotts. Denny's because their company has a history of racist behavior, and mcdonalds because they are horrible.

Mconalds is my #1 boycott. I am allergic to their food. Its weird. I eat there adn I will have a headache and be vomiting within 30 mins. So I havent ate there since 1993. I am currently boycotting walmart. I just dont like their store. I hate the rude employees, the size of their store, their company policies, the way they bully other companies. I will get a panic attack just walking in the store.

That's a very good reason not too go in mcdonalds. I avoid it anyway, but getting sick has to suck. walmart is another that I pretty much avoid, just not to the point of boycotting...yet.

I'm sorry... I just cannot help feeling upset at the treatment that they gave you... It was so unfair and rude!!! I mean, the manager counted the money, and the total was over by $18...how in the world did he still call you a liar and a punk...and even worse, threw you out of the place....??? That was soo weird... It's like they don't really care about their customers at all!! Where is the customer service for goodness' sake...?! And I agree when you said that no matter who you are, whether you are the son of somebody that he knows or not, he should have treated you fairly! What upsets me even worse is how the owner reacted to your complain.. I mean, a manager was trained to be rude to customers??? Is that how they do business?? That is just so wrong!! I think that I would've done the same if I were you... Some people are just not professional...!! As my story goes, one time I was in a grocery store... I was lining up in the register, and the next turn was mine.. The cashier girl was supposed to close her register that time, but she couldn't because there were only one other register open, and people were already lining up behind me... I mean, there was no sign that the register was closed! And she was pissed at the other girl that was supposed to take over her register because she was still doing something else... The pissed cashier girl was so upset in front of us...she yelled at the other girl, and she cursed... The lady behind me was very pissed at her attitude.. I was still trying to be quiet and calm.. And then the manager came.. In my mind, I was thinking, "Good... Yeah, manager, control your cashiers' behavior!!" Do you know what happened next? The girl complained to the manager in front of everybody in the store... What really pissed me off was that the manager asked us all to move to the other line... I left my basket there and left the store... I seriously don't need to watch too much drama in a grocery store, you know... Let the drama stays in soap operas for goodness' sake.. I mean, there are other grocery stores, too, you know... Sigh, some people are just rude and not professional... I don't know how they really run their business.. Oh well...

Thanks for you reply...why go back if there are other places to shop anyway? I mean, really. Customer service should be everyone's first priority. The rest will take care of itself.

Wow that's really horrible that the manager and worker would do that to you! And that is really strong of you to boycott McDonald's for that long, and actually pretty good that you do, because let's face it, McDonald's isn't exactly healthy, so you're protecting yourself and your family from all that greasy food. I have never boycotted a place, but I can see myself doing something like that lol.

Our family avoids any establishment that flies the confederate flag. We have been doing that since I can remember. needless to say, when we travel, we avoid stopping anywhere in south carolina at all. LOL.

I'd be livid too! And you are right it's not about who you are or who you know. It's basic ethics and it doesn't sound like the man had any! I've accidentally gotten caught up in a transaction or with a customer and forgotten their change and I would count my drawer and if there was an error give the customer their correct funds back and apologize. I don't think that would stop me from going but I would not patron that location again or contacted the corporate office. My Aunt spends alot of time and money at McDonalds and gets lousy service at her local McDonalds. They mess up her order all the time. Usually something is missing or they substituted something you didn't ask to substitute.
