Yes, windows vista WILL RUN on 512mb of ram. BUT by running at 512mb of ram you cannot afford to turn on all the new graphical features that windows vista has to offer. Windows vista will also run on old generation processor as well. You do not have to buy the latest and greatest to fully enjoy windows vista (sales rep. will try to tell you this, so you can spend more money). All you need is a mid range computer. However, it would be much wiser to just buy a new computer preloaded with windows VISTA PREMIUM instead of trying to upgrade your old computer's hardware (unless the hardware upgrade is cheap). Try not to get Windows Vista Basic, because even though its completely different and rewritten, it looks almost the same as windows xP. You can go to circuitcity.com and find a $499.00 Compaq laptop with windows vista basic, 512mb of ram, and a Celeron processor. The sales rep will try to influence you on upgrading to 1gb of ram, but if you're only gonna use it to browse the internet and do basic word processing, then there is no need, so don't let him pressure you.

Buying a computer with a Celeron processor is just asking for trouble. For $599 you can get a solid Gateway laptop like mine with an AMD Turion64 processor, 1GB of RAM, and integrated ATI Graphics. It runs Windows Vista x64 Ultimate flawlessly. Granted, I only ran Vista for a week as a test. I prefer XP MCE.

Yes! I do prefer XP MCE than vista, recently kaspersky labs, found out that there are some holes that virus/malware/spyware that can penetrate computers running vista operating system by microsoft... Hmmm....

512MB RAM wouldn't be enough. I suggest you should use 1GB or better.

Ya. Actually it depends on which edition of Windows Vista you are using. For Home edition 512 mb is fine, but for other editions I refer you better go for 1gb. For best performance I think 1gb is a must

I think now it is bad to use windows vista ! Because windows vista has many bugs which we don't know. Vista is not mature now!

if you buy Vista basic then you can operate in 512 mb ram, But if you Buy,Vista home premium or buisness edition or ultimate then You must have 1 gb of ram to play the full features Vista aero Experiance in minimum Conditune.

Yes Vista will run on 512 meg of Ram, but more is better and smoother operation. If you goto the Microsoft webpage they have a download that you can run to see if your system is vista ready. and if not what you have to do to make it vista ready

Hey Antonio, It is right that Vista can run on 512 MB of RAm but will not give you the fullest performance. It would be recommended to use 2 GB for best performance. Vista is a very heavy OS and needs a lot RAM. It would not give you the required results if you are using 512 MB. And if you use 2 GB of RAm you do not need a special allocation of VRAM as 128 MB is taken from the 2 GB. And Vista being a graphically enhanced OS it is very important to have a good VRAM also. ALL THE BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well mister grom what i heard you already have a windows xp and five hundred and twelve mb RAM. If you are planning yo make it a vista you are going to have a sieres of problems: 1. Not enough RAM 2. The prosseser will be off (you need intel core dua) 3. A lot of the hardware is only ment to be used with XP So if you really want a vista it would be cheaper to buy a new computer!!!

windows vista - microsoft vista launches
2GB is the ideal configuration for 64-bit Vista. Vista 32-bit will work ideally at 1GB, and minimum 512mb. However, since 64-bit is handling data chunks that are double the size, you'll need double the memory.

Woow WIndows Vista.. what a hot subject i can say. I have talked a lot in my area with many of my friends and all of them had only positive thoughts about it. I can say that i was blow off by this new windows system. Some things certainly lack to it but this new look which Microsoft has incorporated in it certainly do the money you would give for it. I have waited this new system for 2 weeks and here i am using it. It was pretty hard for me to buy it because in my area it can't be found. So i had to ask a friend from another part of my country to order me. I am so happy using it and all i have are only words of gratitdue. I post here a short description about VISTA. Windows Vista contains hundreds of new features; some of the most significant include an updated graphical user interface (GUI) and visual style dubbed Windows Aero, improved searching features, new multimedia creation tools such as Windows DVD Maker, and completely redesigned networking, audio, print, and display sub-systems. Vista also aims to increase the level of communication between machines on a home network using peer-to-peer technology, making it easier to share files and digital media between computers and devices. For developers, Vista includes version 3.0 of the .NET Framework out of the box. The .Net Framework makes it significantly easier for developers to write high-quality applications than with the traditional Windows API.

It should work on 512MB ram but you will not be able to enjoy the full features of the new operating system. Windows Vista Home Basic will work on 512MB ram but with Home Premium, Ultimate and all other versions wont work with that memory bec it has the Aero feature and needs at least 1G memory. The system will also tend to be slow as Vista is full of graphics. So to fully enjoy it I'd say you maximize your memory at its fullest.
