Do you think your dentists do unnecessary work?

I just went to the dentist today as a new patient. My old one dropped my insurance and I thought I should find one that was in network. I have only last gone to the dentist less than 8 months ago and there were no serious problems. But, now I seem to have all these gum problems and need all this gum treatment and work. Also, I need a brand new filling (less than a year old) re-filled and a new filling on my wisdom teeth (and it has to be resin, according to them, not amalgam). I have insurance and the bill that I got was almost as much as I pay in rent for my apartment.! I looked at what they said the insurance company covers and the percentages weren't right. Have you had a dentist that tried to charge you all kinds of money for procedures that you don't need?

Yes, I've had too many dentists try to pull fast ones on my family. One dentist had demanded my children get the sealants to protect their molars and I agreed and was sold on the validity of the useage. Was told they'd be protected. We had to switch dentists and the new dentist demanded that my son had a cavity in the molar that the sealants were on. I had him show me and he pointed on any old point. No hole, indent, darkening, just the sealant was on there. I refused the work to be done. Again I switched dentist's to Dr. Katnik's office and had my son examined and all the teeth xrayed to discover there was no cavity at all. I was furious to findout the other dentist was willing to damage my son's perfectly good teeth just to make a buck. You have to do your homework and be logical about what they tell you. Another scam at the other dentist's office I remember was that everyone was being diagnosed with needing deep tissue cleaning that was costly before he could do any more work on people. I had come 2-hours earlier than my appointment and listened to what the receptionist was telling people. Over and over the same diagnosis. When I went in for my exam, he tried to tell me I needed the deep tissue cleaning before he could fix my cavity and I come unglued. I looked at him and said does my policy cover the deep cleaning? He responded "NO" it's an extra fee of $$$. I said, then I don't need it...just fix my cavity. He got hostile with me over it. I ended up refusing the deep cleaning and left his office to complain to my dental plan rep. and ended up switching dentists. One of the worst things I had to face with my children being treated was one dentist refused to allow me to be present while my 3-year old was being examined. That just wasn't acceptable to me. With so many molesters today...no way would I leave my child's side. I could see for xrays, but not just the normal exam. We were out of there in a heart beat. The hard thing is waiting to get another appointment. It can take months. I love the dentist I finally found. Dr. Katnik. Everytime I go there it goes so smoothly. Cleaning, xray, and then exam in the same day. Then you come back if you need other treatments done. They are the last good dental practice around anymore.

That's exactly what happened to me in regards to the deep tissue cleaning. I went back to my old dentist and they cleaned my teeth with no problem at all. I couldn't get confirmation on my cavities, but I doubt they were that bad and can wait a little longer. The hygienist told me that her husband went to a dentist and told him that there was something wrong with every one of his teeth. When he went to another dentist, that dentist said there was nothing wrong and his teeth were perfect. If they do try to charge me anything after I left the office, I will definitely file a complaint.

If you're interested in the Dentist that I finally found message me. They're located maybe 15 min. if even that away from you. I have been so happy with the way they do things. My parents and sister's family also goes there and won't even consider anywhere else. He may even be part of your Network. It's worth it when you find someone good and trustworthy.

Thanks. I'm going to stick with my old dentist. I though they weren't taking my insurance any more, so that's why I went to this other one. But, they still do and I'm fine with them. Many other people like him as well.

when i had my braces years back, my dentist does lot of things with my teeth that i don't think is necessary. there are times that he had to put filling in my teeth then after a week, he would remove it and put another set of fillings. there was even one time when he extracted my tooth to give way to the adjustment but when i went to another dentist, he told me that it is possible not to have it removed but just splice it... i didn't let him finish my braces, instead i went to another dentist who was far better than he is and would just do proper procedures on my teeth.

I wonder if some of these dentists realize that doing unnecessary work is actually detrimental to you health? But, it could also be that they want to be as thorough as possible to avoid mistakes and possible lawsuits. But, I think they should do only the minimum amount of work necessary to keep teeth healthy. The more they drill holes in teeth, the faster they seem to decay.

Dentist - Patient in a dentist chair
I know exactly what you mean. I have been seeing my dentist for over 11 years and she is good with regular dental care. I knew I contacted peridontal disease after my son was born. This is a gum disease where you get pockets in your gums and the teeth can decay below the gum line, plus you lose bone support and your teeth can get loose. My dentist was not really treating this, because it is out of her field. She was aware of the problem, but didn't think it had really progressed much. I took it upon myself to see another dentist who would check this for me. WOW was I ever surprised at his suggestion. First he wanted me to see a specialist, who suggested I have more procedures than I have time here on earth for. The cost was more than I would pay for a new car. This was after my insurance would pay. Dental insurance only pays up to $1000.00 a year. He wanted around $10,000.00. He wanted to pull teeth, do implants, do scraping and boning etc. I could not get back to my dentist fast enough. I told her what I did and she said yes I could go that route or I could just have my teeth cleaned 4 times a year instead of twice a year, I could use Plax mouth wash and floss between meals while brushing at least twice a day. All this would do as much as the $10,000.00 procedure. I think the specialist need the big bucks to maintain their fancy offices. I will stick to my genral dentist and do the simple things in life to maintain my teeth for now.

Wow, that's something. My insurance will cover $1500 a year, but it still wouldn't cover all they wanted to do. I also have some recession in my gums, too, but they aren't that bad. The problem I especially had with this dentist is that I signed a something that said I must follow their dental plan or they won't treat me. So, what they said had to be done or nothing at all. So, I couldn't get any treatment unless I have the deep cleaning. I had no choice, it was their way or the highway.

Ya i feel they are here not to cure our tooth problems but for some slezy money, more work more pay a direct relation.

Thanks. I just talked to my mom and it sounds like she is the same dentist that she had years ago. The only thing I'm worried about right now is that they are going to charge me for the x-rays even though I told them that I didn't want them and they did them anyway.

Go to the dentist is like we go to beauty salon the different is one is for your teeth and on is for your hair. If you are a new person in beauty salon, they will offer you so many kind of treatment that they have. But you can rejected. You can do that to your new dentist too. Last couple years i went to a new dentist like you do, they offer me a lot of treatment and said something happen with my teeth and i said just want to check my filling. They forced me but i still said no, so they just check my filling. When i went to my own dentist, she said nothing problem with my teeth at all. Just be careful with your new dentist

In this case, I can't say no. They had me sign a form that said that I MUST follow their course of treatment. I told them I couldn't afford their treatment and asked for a less expensive one. They said they couldn't do it and I had to get what they said. So, unless I get the treatment they want to give me, I can't be treated there. Not all dentists are like that. I went to my old dentist and they were able to clean my teeth with no problem. In fact, they said everything was healthy and couldn't believe someone said I needed the treatment they the other dentist was suggesting.

I do I quit a dentist because they seemed to be more about selling me work to improve my smile instead of my health. I also had two teeth destroyed when one wanted to do a procedure she shouldnt have been doing.

This dentist specialized in cosmetic surgery, which I didn't know. The procedures that they were suggesting were ones that were believable, but I don't think I'm that bad off. I just saw the dentist last year and there were no problems. I also had a lot of work done pretty recently, too. I can't believe they would go so bad that I would need what they say is a $1100 procedure on it.

No, thankfully. I went to a dentist until he retired a few yrs ago & now am going to the one that shared the building with him. And to validate this one, my retired dentist goes to him too.

He he, that's a good one. What makes me trust the dentist I used to go to even more is that I have sent people to him who are really happy with the service.
