Do you homeschool your children?

We're thinking about homeschooling our little one when the time comes. I know a few families that are homeschooling and they are very happy with it. My question is, are you part of group, or do you do it by yourself? I heard doing it in a group is better, since you get all the support you need.

I homeschooled for two years, and am about to start again. The only sort of groups I've ever been part of for homeschooling were e-mail groups. They were okay, but I found I did much better when I followed my own instincts and beliefs. There is plenty of information out there for homeschooling parents, so it's easy to research things and make decisions for yourself. Most homeschoolers, unless they are homeschooling for religious reasons, are not the 'herd mentality' type. We tend to think for ourselves and go our own way to begin with, which is probably why the email groups I was on had so many lively discussions! I can see wanting 'support' when you first start out, especially if you are unsure of your decision. Homeschooling is not for everyone; it takes a lot of dedication and time. But I find it rewarding - at the end of each year, the CAT-5 tests showed my kids working several grade levels above their age groups. And we aren't the 'school at home' type - we don't sit at the table all day with our noses in books. My kids use the internet, watch educational TV (National Geographic, Discovery, Learning Channel, etc), do hands-on activities, explore outdoors, and read books that interest them. The only things I have to sit them down at the table for are math and writing, but even then, I make it fun. Good luck on your adventure, for that's what it truly is!

We're not thinking about homeschooling because of religious resons, but there are some members of my church that do it and they're pretty happy with it. I would like to HS my kids (although I only have one now) the way you explained it. i don't want to be sitting at the table and keep their/our noses in books. I want my kids to 'experience' learning and make it fun, something they look forward to. Thanks for your advice, sapphiresage.

You can actually do both...homeschool on your own and participate with groups for things like field trips etc.....I homeschooled my kids for two yrs before moving to the U.S and it was the greatest thing I could have done at that time...I didnt join any live groups but I was a member of the Homeschoolers legal association and I did talk to, share info with etc etc other homeschoolers on line and I did have plenty of opportuntities to do field trips etc we just chose not to..

Well, the hs group i started to inquire about is taught at home, but you have a weekly meeting, you turn in a yearly curriculum, you go on fieldtrips, etc. I know it'll be a big decision to make, since it's nothing to be taken lightly, it's your children's education!

oh see thats far more structured than what we did...I couldnt have done it that way myself...we actually UNschooled but my gf here in NY homeschooled as well starting shortly after I did and she did it very heavily structure but thats also part of NYState law which is why I'd never homeschool again while living here....I dont remember though if she was part of a group or not though, I dont think she was.... I guess where you live is a big factor too really since it varies (the laws and requirements) from State to State...

Well, i'm not quite sure what the requirements are, nor what the laws are either. I just got some info from one of my acquaintances that hs her three kids and that's what she shared with me. I'm sure that when and if I sign up for a hs group they'll let me know what's required and expected. At least i HOPE that's what they'll do. :o)

I think that groups are good even if you aren't doing this for religious reasons. I really wish that I had a group around here but there aren't many homeschoolers in my area. It would be helpful though. I'm part of some Yahoo groups now though, which have been OK but just not the same. home schooling is great. i suggest anyone thinking about it give it a try. if you get into a group it does make it better. groups are very easy to find. you can usally call the capital of your state and talk to home schooling divison and ask them for a list of the leaders of groups infomation and they will have all of that for you. there are alot of groups as well online. i live in arkansas and we have so many groups it is surprising. i love home schooling my kids they went to public school for a few years but i prefer the homeschooling and so do they. if i can help in any way just let me know. there are alot of free things to send off for online as well taht makes it easier. really good books to use are alpha omega you can get them at book stores or ebay. ebay is usally cheaper. it goes step by step for each subject has teacher guide and keys. it is very good.

I am so glad to hear that homeschooling has been such a possitve experience for you and your family. I want to make sure we make the right choice for our babies, and so far I haven't heard any bad comments or remarks about homeschooling. I'm happy to know that I can call my state capital and ask for information, because I didn't know that. How long have you been home schooling your kids? Why did you decide to homeschool instead of having them continue in public school? Are you involved in a local group, or online group, or are you going at it by yourself? thanks for your help

I homeschool, and have since birth. It varies from person to person as to what they need. Here the only group is strongly Christian so i do it without a support group in real life. But I have made many friends online and joined many groups online that I can turn to for advice and encouragement. http://momisteaching.com

One of the local groups in my area are kids that are aimed towards the Chritian religion, and that doesn't bother me at all, especially since the group has a few members of my church as well. I just want to make the right decision when and IF we choose to homeschool.

Yes, I home school my children and I am thankful that I do. With all of the violence in the schools today, I think that as parents we have to take an active role to protect our kids. We have done this for 4 years now and I think it is the best decision that I ever made. My husband wasn't thrilled with the idea at first, but now he has accepted it and does see a difference in the kids.

My husband is pretty supportive of the decision, but as like me, he doesn't know where to look for more info. I hope that by the time our lo has to go to school, we'll have made a decision.
