hey friends so according to you who was the real hero in lord of the ring? Whether it was Sam the close friend of the frodo and who was all the way till the ring was destroyed with Frodo though he was not carrying the ring OR it was FRODO? Though Frodo carried the ring up till the mountain where it can be destroyed, but it was very clearly shown that right at the last moment when the ring was actually to be destroyed he lost control over himself and ring started controlling him .He was going bac and once again man race would have lost and ring would have taken his life.Though at this stage SAM was still pleading to him to just destroy the ring .He had never asked for the ring from frodo and even gave him the ring back when he had taken that from his body when he was unconscious when monster had actually make a web around frodo's body and saved the Frodo life from monster and enemies proving he was a true friend and had no wrong intentions So what you all feel about this???Share your views

For me i consider Sam is the real hero, although Frodo carried the ring up to the last part Sam helps him to be strong and encourage him at the last end. Every time the ring tries to control Frodo, Sam is always by his side.

no we should understand the story first. i know without sam frodo would be helplesss but did we remember the ring's character? and the deadliness of the ring? anyone who would claim it 1st as frodo did would hav same result as frodo i mean helplessness thus the story itself demands a helper just like sam for frodo.

You know that is a really good question. Without Sam being there Frodo would have never made it to even try to destroy the ring. There is that one spot where Sam states "I cannot carry it for you but I can carry you", and he proceeds to carry him up to the entrance. Throughout the journey it was Sam who kept Frodo from succumbing to the ring. If Frodo had been alone he would have either gone mad and done as the ring wanted or Gollum would have won and stole the ring. In either case the race of man, elf and dwarf would have been lost. So yes I'd have to say Sam really was the true hero of the story. He was the steadfast friend who made sure that everything went as it should.

Thanks :) It's one scene that always gets to me so that's probably why I remember it so well. It's just a very powerful scene in my opinion. I really liked the character of Sam. He had so much loyalty and such a good heart. He was a great friend to have.

I think yes definatey sam was the basis of strength behind frodo's success. Even frodo acknowledged that in the end. I find this is the moral of the story at least the part of it that if you have friends like sam you can overcome the fight with in your self too with their help. rng is just the lust we all have inside us and how it destroys all of us by feeding on us bt if friends help us we can throw away that ring and be free of our greed and lust and conquer our selves too.

I think they are both heroes. One couldn't make it without the other, so for me it's unfair to think one has more of a hero than the other. Frodo had to carry the ring all the time and Sam helped him a lot, making him destroy the ring. They both suffered a lot but fortunately they reached their goal.

I have always thought Sam was more of a hero and did not receive enough recognition. However, it probably goes to show that teamwork is best and it is good to have other people to help us when we need them. Everybody had their part to play to let the good side win. Thank you for starting this discussion. There have been some interesting replies.

I like Sam's character and persistence. I think he is the hero in Lord of the rings. But i think I consider Aragon the real hero

Well are we talking movie or book? I didnt read the books yet, but my sister says that in the books that Sam was able to carry the ring unlike the movie. And Frodo never lost a finger. But I think hearing that Sam was the bigger hero. I think they both shared, and of course the ring took its tole on Frodo. But I think Sam was there to guide and help him. So either tie or Sam maybe? I think so.

Neither one. It was Gollum. Without him, they never would have made it to the mountain in the first place. Who can blame him for losing his marbles at the end?

Truly Sam is the real hero, he can make Frodo to the mountain, he don't care about his self just Frodo and the ring. He so loyal to his master. He is the real hero.

I think Frodo's character is important because he is the one carrying the ring. But what Sam did is really heroic because without him to look after Frodo, the ring would not have been destroyed. Gandalf and Aragon are heroes for me too. =)
