Where I live we have a over 6 dollar stores within a ten mile radius. I love them. I can find things at them that sometimes surprise me; like pots and pans, computer mouse, universal remotes, pregnancy tests, even food plus lots more. I have found some very good deals there. It's also easy to spend a lot because you pick up items thinking it's just a dollar and before you know it you have $40 there in the cart. Do you have a dollar store near you? Do you use them? Have you gotten or seen anything you didn't expect to find there?

Oh yes..I've quite a number of them near me...99-cent stores..and I know what you mean...you pick this up...that up..go to the register and YIKES--it does add up--and the variety of things...I got quite a lot of knick knackie things...little porcelain statues and figurines..I have a set of tea light holders I love to pieces..they're little angel figurines..hey I even got some of my "intimate" apparel there...hehehe...no Victoria's Secret when they do just as nicely..you can get all kinds of nice cookware, utensils--all I can say is whoever thought this kind of thing up must be a billionare by now. Wonder just who did come up with the idea?

Have no clue but I do agree they probably are quite well off now. I found some great socks there recently and I have seen them sell some clothing, that one varies. It's amazing what you can find there and yeah sometimes I've been shocked by how much I found and what it totaled up to.

We have one dollar store in my small town, but there is a bigger town about 13 miles away that has at least 10. It's a town of over 100,000 people so I know of at least 10 there. I do use them a lot. I love them! I get cheap snacks for the kids there...I get my batteries there...I get trash bags and cat litter there and cleaning supplies, as well. These are the things that I always gets from the dollar stores. I also get other things like bday presents, holiday decorations, etc. I love the dollar stores!

Oh I know what you mean. The on near us is really huge and even has a dairy section and frozen foods. I've gotten some great deals there. I also buy holiday decorations and even gifts there as well. I've gotten pet supplies and even home improvement items. It amazes me sometimes what they will have in there. Each time I go I find something new.

You know what...I DON'T have a dollar store near me! LOL I laugh because I have been here for a year and a half and when I first got here my concern was finding Taco Bell because my partner said there wasn't one. I found it my second day here. LOL But now I know this town..and no...I don't have a dollar store near me. I never stopped to think about it. Down in Florida, there were dollar stores all over the place. But here...I would probably have to drive into Tulsa to find one.

Oh that is just wrong, they should have some there. I agree here in Florida they are all over :) Which is nice at times. Maybe they will get one in soon for you.

Is there a Duckwall/Alco store or a Gibsons store in your town? I think those where like the original dollar stores. Of course they cost more now than a dollar store but in their day they were the cheaper store. Some still exist.

Hey I got a better idea for you tia..why don't you open up your own? No..seriously...if you have some money to invest in some kind of shop why not..do you realize how much money you would make if you did? Heck I'd open my own if I had money the thing is in my neck of the woods..there are about ten of them all within walking distance from me (well I do walk a lot--no car!) so there's a real competitive battle..

I'm terrible in the dollar stores because I look at it and go "well, it's only a buck" and plop it in the cart. End result is a good $40 worth of crap in the cart! LOL I've often been surprised at some of the health and beauty stuff they've carried, including some of the scents in hand lotions, body creams and sprays. It's hard to find a scent that lasts and I have to admit I've actually had better luck with some of the cheaper brands and even the dollar store versions then I've had with Bath and Body stuff! Not to mention the HUGE difference in price! A lot of our dollar stores carry tons more then dollar items and that irritates me. Don't call it a "Dollar Store" and then carry stuff that costs more. Just dumb if you ask me. Family Dollar and Dollar General are both companies that do this. I personally prefer the green Dollar Tree, a place where everything is a dollar or less (2 for $1, etc.) and you can get some great stuff!

I don't mind Family Dollar and Dollar General so much but ones that come in and say Dollar Store and then you get there and it is a dollar plus type store irritate me. I suppose the first two don't bother me because they were here before the dollar stores came in. The ones though that make it sound like a dollar only store and then isn't tick me off too.

I love DOllar stores!! They are the greatest!! When my kids get birthday money they go to the Dollar Tree and get to pick out a ton of things, they have so much fun getting so many things with the little bit of money they get, it is great!! I think the things that surprised me the most is that our local Dollar Tree has a frozen food/dairy section. You can get milk, frozen pizzas, frozen dinners, corn dogs...all kinds of stuff! I thought that was kinda crazy =)

Sounds like you have one like me. They have a lot of things at the one near me that is great with the food. I've gotten some really nice deals there and I think if I lived alone I'd shop for most of my meals there.

I used them from time to time. But I will only use the true dollar stores. Meaning I will only go if everything is actually a dollar. I despise Family Dollars and Dollar Generals. I had found things in other stores like Wal-mart and Target for less than what they are asking for. Nothing like ripping people off. My favorite dollar store is The Dollar Tree. The stuff isn't as cheap as some of the stuff found in other dollar stores.

Wow the dollar general near me has quite a lot of savings there. Yes some things are higher but some things are lower. We now have Dollar General Market and that has a lot of savings over the super Wal-Mart near us. We get great deals on the food there.

We have a few dollar stores. I use a lot of stationery items of various kinds and find them very good for these. The no-brand items are just as good as the known brand in the same thing, but at less than half the price. When a plastic case for holding A4 sheets first appeared on the market, they were $2 in the discount stores. Then they started to appear in the brand names for $5 - same thing, same quality. In many items the old saying holds true: "You get what you pay for" The dollar shops sell a lot of cheap items, and many of them are a matter of getting what you pay for, but you don't need top quality for everything, and sometimes the cheaper quality is quite sufficient for what is needed. I love browsing around the discount dollar stores and always find something I need - and I use it.

I do agree there are times you do have to watch because of quality. However if in a pinch you need a pan and don't have the money for a set or a very good one a dollar one will do in the mean time. I've done that before. Make due till I have the money for better. Dollar stores help for that.

Very true. Everything has a purpose. Also, there is no sense in paying for top quality for something that won't be used much. Sometimes a cheaper version will last for the purpose. Thanks for the best response.

Sure do! There are 4 different ones here in Parkersburg. Naturally there is The Dollar Store and The Family Dollar One of them is really yucky and I can't think of the name of the one that I really love but I use it all of the time. When I need to wrap hostess gifts I get the little girl hair bows with all of the twinkly glitter and stars or hearts attached and then take them apart and get about 10 pretty ties out of each bow - yeah! 20 for $1.00. During Yule I also wrap all of my presents in brown Craft Paper and then let my imagination go wild to match the recipient and make the package unique. The dollar stores carry the cheaper grade of this paper and it is perfect to use as it isn't so difficult to fold. I have also gotten some ceramic knick knacks that really look like porcelain. Okay, now you've made me want to get out of my jammies and go shopping!~Donna

Hehhe didn't mean to make you want to go shopping :) But if you do go I hope you find lots of good deals there. I know ours is where I get a lot of little gifts for people. It's great for picking up calendars especially. I can buy it there for a dollar or $5 at Wal-Mart, gee I wonder which I'll get :)

I love them. We have 4 where I live when I'm at home and there are 3 in my college town. The Dollar Tree, where everything is a dollar is nice, but you have to watch because sometimes you can find stuff for a bit cheaper other places if you shop around. I prefer to do that. I like the dollar tree though because they have some nice stuff if you just look and if it's not the best, you're not missing out on much because you're only spending a dollar for it. I found some nice unfinished wooden boxes that would make great jewelry boxes for only a dollar. I've painted mine and everything and I'm adding to it slowly. I bought another just in case the mood struck me to paint the other one a different way.

I've seen boxes like that at the one near me. I agree for little craft items like that they are great for. It's amazing sometimes what you can find there. Also as you pointed out if it doesn't work or you don't like it at least you aren't out much for it.

We have two dollar stores withing 15 miles of each other. We live out in the country and there aren't many stores around here for us. We have to drive about 45 miles to go to a mall. I have found alot of nice things at the dollar stores. I bought me a very nice blender there one time and I never expected to find one so nice there and it was very reasonably priced. I canbuy alot of name brand stuff there alot cheaper than alot of the stores. We go to the dollar store about twice a month for odds and ends because it is alot cheaper and they have alot of name brands there sometimes also.

I like dollar stores too. There are a few in town and that's where I go to get paint brushes, garbage bags, dishwashing liquid, stationery and most house cleaning stuffs aside from laundry detergent because they don't have the brand we use. They even have hangers and cloth pins (you know, the ones we use to hang clothes outside in summer), sewing kits and pretty little photo frames. I don't mind buying snacks there but we can actually get cheaper in bulk stores so I tend to go there for snacks.

You do have to watch because I have found cheaper at times at other places but for the most part I do well there. I get a lot of my cleaning supplies there as well. Not laundry soap but other things like toilet bowl cleaner or furniture polish. Things like that.

We have afew 2 euro shops around town here in Dublin. They used to be Pound Shops but when we changed over to the euro, changed their name. I love going in there to pick up things. You can get cleaning stuff, cloths etc for little or nothing compared to the big main stores. They also do birthday cards etc, 3 for 2euro. If you go into a card shop, you would buy one card for about 3 or 4 euro. You can easily spend a fortune in there but you get a lot for your money too.

In my town we have two Dollar general stores and 1 Dollar Tree store. The Dollar Tree store really is a Dollar Store. Everything there is $1.oo or 2 for $1.00. At the Dollar General store the prices differ but are still cheaper than other discount stores. I once bought a really nice picture frame at the Dollar Store that was more of an expensive store type. I ususally buy my laundry supplies at the Dollar general. We buy batteries there too. The ones at the Dollar tree are cheaper but don't last as long. I am always surprised to see something that cost over $20.00 at a Dollar Store. That just doesn't seem right.

I know what you mean there with finding things that at other stores would be far higher. I also like the Dollar General although I don't consider them a Dollar store; more of the old five and dime stores not that you can buy anything for a dime anymore.

Oh yes! I like to find name brand items like carpet steamers, vacuums, telephones and Black&Decker tools at BigLots. I also buy all of my name brand households at Family Dollar for cheaper. Dollar General is great for things like saver containers, bedding, rugs, and laundry baskets at low prices. I love a bargain ; )

I do enjoy shopping at dollar stores, but I don't do it often. A lot of the reason I don't shop there often is because of the reason you said, you get in there and start grabbbing stuff and before you know it you have a mass amount in your cart. lol But otherwise is I just don't like a lot of their products, but I end up buying them because they are so cheap and then get them home and I don't care for them. I do get to find candles & books there quite often that I am surprised I have found there. As well as gift bags & the paper that goes in them.

I love the Dollar store! I did the kids Easter basket's this year, and alot of our Christmas decorations and such come from our local dollar stores. I've found Hanes sweatshirts, crafting supplies, etc. at ours. They are also the place to go if you need party supplies, balloons, etc. I think what surprised me the most was when I found cough syrup, tylenol, and other medications, that you pay more for at Walmart. They don't always have it in stock, but when they do, I grab some.

Over here in the UK we call them pound shops and yes we have lots of them here. Where I live there are 4 of them within a 5 minute walk from my house (I live very close to the high street). I go to a store called "99p Stores" quite often as they often have some great bargains like a 4 pack of Pepsi Max for 99p or a pack of lightbulbs or batteries or 12 pack of crisps or branded shampoos. One of my best finds in recent times was a wonderful pot of Dove moisturising cream, it was lovely and silky and by the time I realised how great it was and went back to get some more they'd sold out! These shops are also very handy for buying stocking fillers at Christmas like boxes of chocolates and a variety of gifts for small children - as they don't care how much you spend on a gift as long as it works and it's cool! I like to buy 6 or 7 toys for a kid and wrap them all up and just watch them having fun opening them up and seeing their cute excited face!

Oh I know I've gotten quite a few stocking stuffers at them along with small gifts. They have such a variety there that often I can make my own gift baskets for people. When my niece was under 5 we did most of our shopping there for the holidays because at that age the gifts are pretty simple and as you said they don't know prices yet.
