Are you using a wordpress.com blog or have you set one up somewhere else? if it's yoursite.wordpress.com for eg then I don't think you can have/add widgets (the whole no advertising thing) if you've set one up somewhere else - in your dashboard you'll see a setting for appearance - go in there and you'll see where you can add widgets - some are pre-defined (recent posts, comments, calendar etc)...
