The term hydrocephalus means a head that is larger than normal while the term microcephaly means a head that’s smaller. Microcephaly affects about 25,000 infants in the United States each year. The small size might not be noted right away, but can develop by the time the child has reached two years old. For this reason, guidelines have been issued by the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) regarding the monitoring of children with microcephaly.
