i used to live in portugal on an air force base, and i got a job as a cashier. however i had to try to learn to speak some portuguese. well because i was the only american working at this one shop, portuguese people would look down at me and talk crap about me right infront of me in portuguese.
i've also had portuguese people come to my counter talk to me and they were ready for check out until they found out that i am american, they grabbed all of their stuff and moved to the next...
