“God damn” when did “shit” become so “holy”?

So many people use the phrase “God damn” without even thinking about what they just said. For Christians it's offensive and is considered using God's name in vain—which is a sin. However, for the rest of the world do you have any clue as to what that cursing phrase really means? Curse means to wish harm upon or to invoke evil upon.
