How can I lose weight and keep my blood sugar balanced? |
|
I woudl really like to lose weight. I recently tried cutting down what I am eating but am suffering from low blood sugar. I avoid sugar as much as possible as well as caffeine and eat wholemeal. I eat at regular times and have snacks between meals which I try to keep healthy. But I am still finding that my blood sugar is low. If anyone has any advice I woudl really appreciate it.

1. wachit14 (3244) | 2 years ago | Low blood sugar usually requires people to eat six small meals a day as opposed to eating three regular meals. It also requires a person to stay away from simple carbs like cookies, cakes, etc. and stick with complex carbs like whole grain pasta, brown rice, etc. Diet should be high in lean protein as this takes longer to digest and therefore, helps stabilize blood sugar. Also stay away from caffiene if you can and opt to drink herbal tea instead. Of course, add fresh fruits and veggies to your diet through out the day. Hopefully, this will help.

racheldarcy (2410) | 2 years ago | I will try cutting down on my fats. I will try to drink more but the symptoms I am getting are bad temper and nightmares which I do not think are due to dyhydration - I agree that feeling tired, headaches and light headedness can be due to dehydration rather than low blood sugar

3. cremechese (4503) | 2 years ago | Oh dear. That's the same difficulty my sister has. She needs to lose weight but has to snack often due to her hypoglycemia. Even if they are healthy snacks they will keep you from taking the weight off it seems. I will look up some links, I should have thought to research for my sister before. She doesn't use the internet. Here's one that appears to have good diet recommendations: http://www.gicare.com/pated/edtot19.htm I am wondering if exercise isn't the key. My sister hasn't been able to go for the long walks she used to in this morning because she's also having trouble with her feet. Spurs or something. Although she has a day care and does plenty of running around, lol.

4. easy888 (4323) | 2 years ago | Hello,if you would really want to lose weight, you can do exercise regularly, you can go jogging every morning, not only it can improve the metabolism and improve your health, it can also make you refresh everday, you may have better digestion and absorption. Also you have to control your diet in order to reduce bidy weight, you should avoid to have food which is rich in fat content, you should not have snacks bewteen your meal as it will make you gaining weight. If you want to have a balanced blood sugar level, you can have more carbohydrates in your diet, for example, wholemeal bread, because carbohydrates will be converted to glucose in yoru body which help to maintain a stable blood sugar level

racheldarcy (2410) | 2 years ago | Thank you for the suggestions. If I miss out the snacks between meals my blood sugar gets very low. I lost weight in the past by sticking to 1000 calories and still managed to have 3 meals and 3 snacks a day. I will certainly try to cut down my fats. Thanks.

5. winky73 (985) | 2 years ago | Keeping your blood sugar on a normal level is very importend for anybody that is trying to lose weight. The best thing I have found are glucose or dextrose tablets. They work fast, taste great and are usually low in calories.....making it very easy for you to still stay within your daily calorie allowance. They are safe for people with Hypoglycemia and are actually recomended for treating low blood sugar.

6. organiclady35 (6179) | 2 years ago | I notice that some people have advised you to cut down on fat. dont cut out the good essential fats found in nuts, seeds and their unprocessed oils. I think you are vegetarian so you dont eat fish, if I am wrong then oily fish is a good source of essential fat for you. Also avocados are a good source. If you include essential fats within what you eat you will find this actually helps you to lose weight. I find eating enough protein helps to keep my blood sugar more balanced. If I eat too many white refined carbs and sugar then that makes my blood sugar crash much more quickly. If things dont improve I recommend visiting your doctor for advice.

7. trinidadvelasco (7673) | 2 years ago | If you really want to lose weight, you will have to have daily exercises. You don't have to have the very taxing ones. Jogging, briskwalking, bicycling, jumping jack and hoolahoops will be fine. Cut on the carbohydrates and starches. Increase the number of meals you take daily. This way, you will take food in low amounts always. This will allow your body to consume all the food you take and fats will not accumulate in your belly then to the other parts of the body. Start to move up your water consumption until it gets to three liters each day minimum. The water consumption will be adjusted slowly until this level is attained. Make sure that you have a balanced diet and increase your consumption of high fiber foods like papaya, guava, pineapple, cabbage and other leafy vegetables, apples, grapes and take care of your protein intake - you need to have enough protein to keep you going.

8. astromama (726) | 2 years ago | I agree with organiclady... you need healthy fats. I am hypoglycemic also and one thing I always carry in my purse is a little bag of almonds. Almonds are protein rich and will stabilize my blood sugar if it gets low. Also, grapefruit have a low glycemic index, so they are great to snack on if you like them. Most other fruits are too high in sugar and cause me to crash! Sounds like you're doing good to stay away from caffeine and sugars... I'd snack on lowfat cottage cheese, whole wheat crackers, or nuts.. anything with protein should help balance you out:-)

9. charlene2350 (4857) | 2 years ago | I think dividing your calories into 6 small meals a day will help, and cut some of the fats.. but it is going to be hard, I bet if Insulin hinders your weight loss like it does mine. I am always hungry because insulin is always being produced.

10. callarse1 (2439) | 2 years ago | Hello, racheldarcy. Eatting small meals that balance fiber, low sugar and low fat are good for diabetics. For example, a garden salad with many types of lettuce with a little dressing could be a good option for a small meal. Another option would be eating Bran cereal with fat free milk (or soymilk). Bran cereal contains lots of fiber which is good for you. I am not sure if complex carbohydrates are good for a diabetic, but I think they are. Bran cereal is made with 100% whole gran wheat so I think that qualifies as a complex carbohydrate. I think it would be good if you went to a dietrician. It does cost some money, but with diabetes, it may be good to. If you have insurance I am sure they would pay for it. Have a nice day. Pablo
