Would you ever use the Keeper?? Why or why not??  email this discussion to a friend?

I use the keeper cup. I think it's technically known as the 'Diva' cup, and it's made of surgical plastic. You squeeze it in at the top, insert it, and remove to empty between 8-12 hours later. It costs around $35 dollars and you can use it for 2 years before replacing. It's environmental because there are no pads, tampons or packaging being dumped in landfills, it's cost efficient... I mean, $35 bucks for 2 years! It's great! Plus, there's no chance of toxic shock and I'm able to sleep, swim, whatever without worrying about leaks. It is a little more 'hand's on', but I'm comfortable with that. You just remove it, spill it into the toilet, rinse with warm water and re-insert. I also keep a small pack of organic tampons in my purse (similar to OB, they have no applicator) just in case I'm caught out somewhere without my cup. When my cycle's over I wash it out with a gentle soap and store it in a little cloth bag that comes with it. It's the best thing I've tried, and I love it!

That is the strangest thing I believe I've heard of in a while!
I didn't know they had such a thing!
Where did you get it? Online?
I don't know really if I'd be up for it - since it's a little more hands - but I'd at least take a look at the website you got it on.
Weird!

myLot reputation of 95/100. astromama (725)  5 years ago

Again, it's one of those things I got at my local organic food co-op! I know you can find them online.. they're called keeper cups or diva cups... your response is so cute! Lol! I love exposing my 'weird' environmentalist ways!

myLot reputation of 64/100. GnosticGoddess (3488)  5 years ago

I love your environmental ways! I will have to do a search for those - cause if nothing else I've got to see what it looks like!

My town sucks!

myLot reputation of 64/100. GnosticGoddess (3488)  5 years ago

Okay...I checked a couple of sites out. That thing looks painful! I think I'll stick to what I know so to speak :)

myLot reputation of 95/100. astromama (725)  5 years ago

Lol! Painful! You don't feel it anymore than you do a tampon, lol! I'm sorry, i get a kick out of your responses... It really isn't painful at all, it's made of very soft plastic and it conforms to your body. I hate how tampons are so drying and fibrous. The keeper is based on the notion that blood is meant to flow OUT of your body, not be absorbed in something and trapped IN your body, which is, if I understand correctly, why people sometimes get TSS. Most of my friends think it's weird, or gross, but from what I've read the 'cup' has been used for a long time, even back in the 20's before some male dominated company started making disposable products for women. You live in Colorado, right? I would think there would be more of a liberal, eco-friendly scene there...

LOL! No I live in Kentucky. :( I'm still unsure. I guess I'd have to hold it first. It's a neat concept but I tried using the birth control ring and I could feel it all the time and hated it. I used it for a month and a half before I tossed it.

I've seen it before but I'm weird. I don't like things going in there, just ask my husband lol. I like mama cloth! I was in a co-op with my sister and I always like to weird her out with my hippy ways, so I showed her that. She asked me what the heck that was, I told her, man I loved the expression she got on her face, I think it was worse than the expression she got when she learned about cloth diapers and mama cloth lol.

I have a mooncup, which is a similar thing.

but the mooncup is made of medical grade silicon and should last about 10 years, if looked after properly. costs about £20 in the UK. I think they ship overseas. www.mooncup.co.uk

I just love it. it's really comfy, economical, good for the environment, healthier for the body, more practical, more reliable and from other peoples accounts, can even reduce period pains. I also find that the blood is cleaner than with a tampon. it's not discoloured or smelly, or stale.

it's a wonderful thing.

I'd never want to go back to disposables.

just checked the website, and they charge £18.99 including delivery worldwide.

I have never even heard of this before. It doesnt sound that bad actually, well if you would have asked me 3 years ago before giving birth I woulda said no way but now it doesnt sound bad at all. Thats really interesting to hear that they actually have something like this available. I hate using pads or tampons so this may be the thing for me. Where do you get something like this?

if the Diva Cup is silicon, then I think the keeper must be the one made of latex, which isn't so durable, and obviously some people have a latex allergy.

I have never even heard of this. WOW! I don't know if I would use it, though. I am so used to using my regular tampons. I am 36 yrs old and been using tampons since I was 16 so I know it would be hard. I wouldn't say I wouldn't try it, though. Sounds really good for the environment and all. Where do you get these? Are you in the US?

myLot reputation of 95/100. astromama (725)  5 years ago

I'm in the U.S. I got mine at my local co-op, but if you google Diva cup you can check out their website. There's a great q&a page that answers lots of common questions and you can order off the site. I didn't find it hard to switch from tampons at all... and Galena was right. One of the best things is there is no stale, funky odor!

myLot reputation of 87/100. Galena (6230)  5 years ago

also, another benefit is that you can put them in when you're due, but not bleeding, unlike tampons. so you don't have to wait for it to happen if you're worried it might happen when you're out and about. great for long journeys and days out.
