Eating !!!! | | | | We, in my family in India, eat food with our fingers in clean stainless steel plates (thalis) . We do not use knives, forks or spoons normally. Similarly for drinking water , we use properly cleaned stainless steel glasses. We stopped using glass-tumblers because of the very frequent breakage, due to the negligence by the maid-servant , who does the house hold work and the utensil cleaning. Long back, we used utensils made from brass for cooking and ‘gun-metal’ (kansa) for eating; but those days are gone. Is this not economical and good for health. What you do, what utensils you use. Please discuss. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |

| | It is absolutely wonderful to read about different types of eating habits around the globe - I have been to India and I know exactly what you are talking about...it did fascinate me. However, I dislike touching food with my hands, it is because I am obssesive compulsive and hate to dirty my hands therefore I always will eat with some type of silver or a napkin if I have to pick up teh food with my fingers. In my house we use porcelain plates for diner and I like to make it a ritual of setting the diner table. I love glasses made out of crystal and yes, as you mentioned they are highly breakable and I do break a LOT... Stainless steel does not affect your health, as far as I know, if you eat or drink from such plates, glasses but, you may want to check with your doc. PS - I have to say I love Indian food! | | | | | | | kalyani2007 (2409)

| | When I have anyone around, I use a knife, fork and spoon to eat. Here in the US to use your hands is OK only sometimes with certain types of food. Hamburger, for instance, or fries are OK to eat with your hands but most other food is eaten with fork/spoon. When I am alone or with my close family, we usually use a fork and a piece of bread or tortilla. I scoop up meat and beans and rice with the tortilla, using the fork only to load it up. The fork rarely touches my mouth in this instance. In this sense, I eat similar to your family in India. Flatbread is my utensil of choice. But, as I said, if there is company, I eat the "proper" way with knife, fork, spoon. If we are eating chinese, japanese, thai, etc I use chopsticks, also. I much prefer a glass for drinking water. Plastic, the main alternative here, never seems to get as clean as glass. Although, as you said, they break all the time. I'm a klutz (very clumsy) and break them myself. | | | | | | | kalyani2007 (2409)

| | We seldom eat with our hands unless we are eating shrimps, crabs and other finger foods. Commonly, we use spoon and fork and sometimes chopsticks. | | | | | | | | | | 1 Tip to Lose Stomach Fat Surprising foods that help to fight abdominal fat. TruthAboutStomachFat.com | add comment | | | |
